Took Defender to Pete Bell at BAS.
Found in a matter of minutes that the instrument cluster had blown. Replaced with a new one. All is good. |

I just had the same issue on a TD5. In my case it was a single wire that had come disconnected behind the dash that's responsible in powering the instrument cluster and fuel pump.
Basically on the back of the ignition barrel are two wires that are given power when you turn the key. The first turn of the key is when it sends power to the instrument panel and fuel pump, the second turn it sends power to the aux items like heater, ciggy socket and radio. So in my case as soon as I could tell the aux items were working, it had to be that power wasn't reaching the instrument panel and fuel pump. This is also why the engine turns over but won't start...because no fuel is being pumped through. I had made it about 1/4 mile from starting the engine to when it stopped. I think this was because it used the diesel left in the engine until no more was was pumped through. Just to confuse matters, the mileage still showed in the instrument panel suggesting power was getting to it. Not sure if this is run by a re-chargeable battery in the instrumental panel and therefore doesn't rely on a feed? Someone else might know. Hope it helps someone!! |
