Every day V8.
Hi all
As the government has us in limbo over how they are going to penalise diesel vehicle owners, i'm trying to be one step ahead as in when my engine finally goes to the landy heaven, what to replace it with Rolling Eyes
I am very much old skool and dont like a lot of electrics, but at the same time they are good for the Td5 engine, so i have thought what diesel engine i would put in, so that leaves the petrol engine, as many of us would love a V8 it's the running costs that is a big negative Sad

My question to you is that are there any members on here that use there V8 landy for every day use and has the V8 you put in been reliable ? As some of you know i do a lot of miles as millie is a worker, so i would like a V8 that will be able to cope with the miles, be reliable and some sort off economy will help Very Happy i dont have a big budget for a Wildcat etc...... conversion so i will have to see whats out there Wink

Thank you for your time reading this and your reply Thumbs Up 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Hello

no idea on if its possible but my dads old range rover was a TdV8, he got between 30 / 35 mpg and it could move when needed. Would that fit in a Defender? best of both worlds a V8 and MPG over the teens Thumbs Up

Then looking for electric motors for my lads toylander I was surprised at the searches back, Lexus 450H engines, 3.5 V6 but battery also... Had me thinking...could that fit a defender?

I'm sure most things are possible its down to ££

Yes had a V8 and used it as a daily drive, briefly, when I was doing 35,000 miles a year. It was costing more to run than I was getting paid so that didn't last long.
However I put the V8 back in it again and now it is my only car, has done 60,000 miles, since I put a V8 back in, without having a spanner on it other than to replace oil and filters.
The only suggestion I would make is to see if you can find a 4.2, much nicer to drive than a 3.5. If I drive it gently I can just about scrape 20 to the gallon from it. If I don't pay attention it dips to around 17 and if I do a lot of town work it gets about 14.
Loading it up doesn't seem to bother it, neither does towing a trailer, headwinds are a killer though, economy drops markedly

Well, you could always do what the factory did (occasionally):

2.5 petrol, low tech and sort of economical.

If it didn't accelerate like a slug on diazepan, I would recommend it. Laughing

I run my 3.9 V8 every day, love it!

Remember the Rover V8 is an old lump so really needs a good overhaul/ rebuild. My current lump is proving reliable but could do with a freshen up.

Fuel economy is rubbish but I really don’t like diesel so I live with it

I've had the exact same thoughts myself. After a bit of research it came down to the Toyota/Lexus 3UZ-FE 4.7 V8. From what I've read a very reliable engine, VERY tunable and returns decent-ish MPG (25 - 35mpg, so TD5 MPG) Plus seems to have a similar torque curve as the TD5 which is a big bonus in a Defender.

Reasonable power output too sitting at around 350bhp and 500nm which keeps it sensible both power & money wise. Syncro Gearboxes do an adapter plate for the R380 for the 1UZ (which is very similar to the 3UZ) which means the engine will bolt to the R380. So no super expensive gearbox/TX box to worry about nor the fitting. Equally with the reasonable power levels the standard drive train should be up to the task, at least for a while, if you don't drive with a lead foot. Otherwise off the shelf bits & Syncro Duraspec boxes would up to the challenge.

Should you want to go full blast one day, there are bolt on superchargers/twin turbo kits and the engine can produce 500bhp+ with ease.

Engines are available for £800 - £1.5k depending. Shall be the route I go down if my TD5 goes bang or I'm taxed out of owning a diesel.

1UZ conversions have been done many times in Defenders for challenge trucks and buggys, much cheaper engine (£500+) but different torque curve much higher up the rev range. So a lot of the hard work has been done

Not seen any advertised in the same way as the LS jobs but there will be companies out there that will do it. (4x4 fabrication will) considering its not as complex as an LS swap I would probably have a go myself.

1UZs are very popular as a very cheao engine and still pretty decent
