TD5 drivetrain into series 88 land rover
Hello

I was wondering if anyone has any experience installing a td5 drivetrain into a project vehicle.

I purchased a 2001 TD5 90 drivetrain complete with gearbox and transfer box
engine ecu, harness , throttle pedal ect..

Engine had EGR delete , Antitheft module has been turned off in ECU from what owner told me

What other sensors will be needed to get this engine running?

I hope to install this is my 1960 series 2 SWB 88 to make it a more drivable classic . Axles will also be changed and power steering installed.

Also I am in Canada so support for any technical TD5 help is very, very limited.

Thank you for any advice

Hi, I did get your email just short of time to reply in detail at the moment.

You have pretty much what I had, one thing to research is the fuel system, the Td5's is relatively unusual as it has a higher pressure in-tank pump than typical for a diesel vehicle.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I think you would hold the record for the shortest rear propshaft...... Laughing

I’ve not seen it done, or heard anyone do it, but it would be a great conversion.
Im wondering if there will be overall length issues of the engine and box?

If you put a Defender front end on, then it should all work,
But if you want to keep the series front end, that’s where your problems will be.

Getting a fan and rad into it may be a problem?

It will be interesting to see how you get on with it,
Good luck Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

I think you'll find that the Td5 and R380 box is way too long to fit in an 88" chassis. Don't forget that you'll also need (or at least want) to fit the Td5 front axle since you'll be running full-time 4wd, so you'll want CV joints not UJs in the swivels. That will be a challenge in its own right.

Nice project! Like others have said the rear prop will be really short as the Td5 R380 bell housing is around 18" i guess.
In a Defender it is mounted forward upto the radiator, where is a Series you have a recessed grill.

Plenty of challenges but would make an interesting vehicle.

Good Luck!

YRM do all the brackets to convert to later axles,

https://yrmit.co.uk/product/axle-conversio...eries-2-3/

With this sort of conversion it’s a fine line between keeping it a series leafer, or something else?
I did think of later disc braked axles, permanent 4x4, bigger rad upfront, and loosing the series front end,
But then it would have lost it’s series vehicle identity,
Which I didn’t want to do.

R380 boxes do get fitted, but it’s a fair bit more work,
And usually using a V8 which is probably shorter than the TD5 engine.

Dose anyone know the length of a TD5 engine,
Or better still the engine and box as a whole unit? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

You are looking at approx 1.7M from the front of the factory Fan to the rear edge of the standard TD5 handbrake drum.

Thats not exact as its only tape measured off mine thats currently a rolling chassis, need to add more naturally if the radiator is going in front 3 Landrovers

I put a 300 Tdi and LT77 short bell housing into my Series III 88 station wagon. The rear prop shaft was 16 inches long. I seriously doubt you’ll get the motor to sit properly above the front axle case and fit under the bonnet, maybe??? You will for sure have to use a Defender bonnet and front grill. The front of the engine will also probably not fit behind the front crossmember. I had to remove the clutch fan on the 300.

A regular R380 gerabox will simply not fit behind the motor, you will have to fit a short bell housing R380. The seatbox, bulkhead and tunnel cover will all need custom fabrication work.

These are some of the main things I learned when I did my conversion many years ago. You’ll also need to figure out where to locate the electrical components, ECU etc. Once you’ve figured all this out, you’ll want to upgrade the axles and diffs as they will explode with that torque. Disco I and RRC diffs will fit but you’ll probably need custom axles.

There is no short bellhousing option for a Td5 R380 - only the 4-cyl engines.

I think you’re into custom bellhousing and gearbox input shaft territory here. Buy a 109!
