2002 Defender 110 Td5 CSW Java Black
What started as......
I have an 02 TD5 110 and I thought I’d share the latest shenanigans and what the joys of owning it have brought me.

In the run up to Christmas I noticed a lack in power from the engine and following a good search of this site (not a TD5 guru, last 110 was a V8 ) I looked to replacing the injector harness, followed by cleaning the red ECU plug, then removing the ECU and cleaning the oil from it. All done and back together, no change. Then onto air filter, MAF sensor, MAP sensor and a big handful of straws to clutch, still not right.

It got to the week before Christmas and I managed to get it booked into my local garage who are Land Rover specialists, to try and pin down the problem. I got an ominous phone call ‘not all is well, on a test drive the engine ‘ran away’ and needed to be stalled to recover it, there is 5 litres of fuel in the sump!!!’

After recovering it it appears that the cylinder head was cracked, the source of my problems. Simple fix, new head, new seals and gaskets, oils etc and good to go.......not quite.

On removal of my cylinder head there was a scored piston and 4 bent conrods!!

So by now my love of the TD5 is dwindling, the engine has only done 118000 and has a full service history.

I’m gutted.

After much of the pacifying the other half, 3 weeks in the garage and a good rebuild of the engine I am lighter by £2500 but today I drove my 110, wow it pullls like a train, I’m very happy!

It had all the broken bits replaced, new bearings everywhere, seals, oils, gaskets, a new injector (one was not quite right) and it really does drive well.

If you see me waving furiously at you, you’ll appreciate why, just wave back.
Very Happy

Update
Ran the 110 for about 200 miles, then.....bang, more smoke, covered both lanes of the A38, pulled over and turned off ignition, engine ran away, put into second gear foot of the clutch and stalled it, dead! Recovered home then a car to garage who did the work, lots of expletives. So after a further investigation it turns out the head they fitted, after skimming and pressure testing, had a crack too and failed, so did the turbo, unsurprisingly after suffering 2 head failures.

The garage did the honourable thing in purchasing a new recast head and acquired a second hand turbo and finally all rebuilt and working well.......not quite. I picked it up last Friday and it drove really well. After such a long time away I was really pleased to have it back and looked forward to getting out in the snow. Saturday morning I went out to...a lot of snow and a significant oil leak Big Cry

After taking off the covers it looks like it was coming from behind the viscous fan, hitting it and going everywhere. Monday morning back to the garage where we nearly had a moment ‘not sure we touched that area’ followed by ‘if the exhaust had fallen off I’d have seen that as bad luck’ almost an engine rebuild and it’s leaking oil, a lot, from the engine, fix it!!

I pick it up Friday, more updates to follow.

Update

Picked it up Friday, garage didn’t say what was leaking (I suspect the front crank seal) but all fixed, was going to say no leaks but it has a few small ones, the huge one has been fixed. drove it home and it does really drive well now, however....

Going round corners and bumps I’m getting a rubbing noise now Big Cry

I’m done with garages now so up on axle stands and a good look underneath finds...the plastic, acoustic? Shield that sits under the engine is loose and rubbing on the prop shaft every now and again. A closer look and it looks pretty damaged, not recent though. 5 bolts and a bit of manoeuvring later and it’s out, in two pieces, sodden with oil too. My last 110 didn’t have one and after researching on here it appears not all TD5s had them and a lot have broken so it’s en easy decision to not replace it.

The good bit. Drove it to work tonight, 100 miles, and it never missed a beat, sounded good and pulled well, even up some large hills. 100 miles isn’t enough to restore my faith but I think I’ve turned a corner now and it’s going to get some miles on it over the next few weeks. My smile is slowly returning. Smile
