Strange Sucking Sound.
Strange Sucking Sound.

My 2007 Tdci Defender 90 has started making what I can only describe as a sort of strange sucking sound when accelerating in 2nd and 3rd gear. The sound occurs in the middle of the rev range. It does not occur when the engine is revved with the vehicle at rest nor does it occur under gentle acceleration. There does not seem to be any loss of power. If I have the rear flap of the soft top up it seems to be exhaust related and when I have it down it seems to be more engine related. The only modification I have carried out to the exhaust is to replace the central box with a straight through pipe. This was done some time ago and the noise has only started recently. Any ideas?

Its fairly easy to check if your exhaust is leaking. A visual inspection will normally show a sooty mark where its coming through.

Although in your case if its a sucking rather than blowing sound, it would suggest the problem is intake side. Have a look under the bonnet and check your intercooler pipes etc. See if you've got a split hose.

It could also be weakened intake pipework or a blockage that collapses a hose during peak power/maximum intake suction. Obviously when it collapses air will end up getting sucked in from elsewhere.
