Intermittent no power at low revs
Right .. apologies for first post being a mechanical query .. but I have an issue on my new beloved defender and one month of a dealer warranty left (and i want an idea of what has gone wrong when they try and get out of covering it) .. so..

Vehicle is a 2011 TDCi 2.4.

It has been perfect for two months but the following has started creeping in .. usually at stand still, the revs will drop low for a second or two, apparently randomly .. it doesn't stall .. but during this time the accelerator pedal appears to do nothing (only happened handful of times so hard to tell).

Today it happened when going round a slow (5mph) corner and pretty much drifted to a halt before it went away and carried on. Not ideal!

While I get busy learning the engine systems .. can anyone provide any hints? I'm guessing fuel delivery since it doesnt stall and appears to loose all power (not partial).

Any assistance or ideas to troubleshoot very appreciated.

Thanks, MAC

I’m no expert but recently I’ve read a lot on the VCV valve, it’s function and failure symptoms.

Yours sure sounds to me like it fits one of those suspected symptoms- have a search on the forum and read up on it, see if you agree. My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

Thanks for your reply .. looks like a likely suspect after a quick search around.

Just to add that outside the idle power drops .. it is fine .. I've not experienced any issues at speed or higher revs etc. Yet. I also don't get any fluctuations or chattering that others report.

Fairly sure they aren't temperature dependant either as pretty cold in UK at the moment and it occured after maybe 10 minutes driving.

It's apparently just been serviced by the dealer before I bought it too and have probably only done ~500 miles in it since as been in Cuba for 3 weeks (will post photos of Cuban defenders soon!)

Sorry for delay - active EGR valve is a good question - since an EGR fault flagged up under diagnostics.

It's been cleaned and lubricated and the problem seems ok for now .. but will take a look into EGR blanking plates. I'm sure there are many threads on them already.

Happy days if that was all it was! Thanks for your advice.

The EGR can put MAF readings out if any issues present which can in turn drastically effect performance in random ways. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

That sounds like something your GP might diagnose! "I'm afraid it's bad news, Mr McGovern, you have an active EGR valve"

The power loss problem could well be VCV.
