Actually the diff has no "pinions" at all, it has two differential gears, two side gears, and one cross pin. All the gears are bevel gears.
The terms "two pin", and "four pin" as used in the context of Landrover diffs are misleading, inaccurate, and technically incorrect, but enormously widespread thanks largely to internet and its amazing ability to turn myth into fact! Better terms would "two gear" and "four gear", or "single (cross-)pin" and "two (cross-)pin" (even though a four cross-pin diff generally has one cruciform pin). Regrettably it is highly likely though that the accepted misuse will ever be changed now. Another example of this internet-driven butchery of technical language is the term "hawse fairlead", a non-existant and nonsensical alternative for the correct "plain fairlead". All the term "hawse fairlead" does is indicate that the user has no idea of the definition of the word "hawse"! Again it is, sadly, probably too late to do anything about this. |

This is turning out to be a really interesting thread, and hopefully also acting as few free bumps
I'm pleased Blackwolf has raised this point as over recent years I was convinced that my long-distant engineering memory was playing up more regularly. I too thought these were bevel gears, and that a pinion had 'square' teeth - albeit a pinion is the smaller of two meshing gears, with the larger being the aptly named 'gear.' In any case, I fear you are correct Blackwolf, as not only are many basic engineering facts and nomenclature becoming lost over time, they are also distorted and in some cases completely 're-engineered' due to the power of the internet (or those uploading!). I won't mention bolts and set screws Back to the thread, I think it's a bargain and hope it sells quickly I do wonder if this would fit a TD5 90.... |
