I agree entirely pannawonica. With shocks, springs, bushes, tyres, etc. it does really come down to personal experience/preference. I adore old Man Emu shocks, have covered many many 10s of 1000s of miles on them and have just treated the 110 to a full set of their springs and shocks. The difference is superb. The Defender feels fantastic on and off road and the suspension setup is just about perfect (for my needs). Now before the roll cage and combined with the standard LR springs fitted to a CSW the Konis were very good and I was completely sucked in by the "adjustable" feature of them, buying them over the Old Man Emu shocks. It became apparent though that for them to be truly useful as adjustable shocks then the mechanism of having to in effect remove the shock to adjust them is a massive PITA. This being the case my advice to Chopperone is to go in with their eyes wide open. Plus there are a number of truly adjustable shocks on the market if that is a truly desirable feature. Personally, however, I find the Old Man Emu setup to be |

Thanks to everyone for their advice.
I am going for OME but do I need their medium ones? If I ever went for an adjustable shock set up it would have to be something that was adjustable from the drivers seat..... Guy May your life be like toilet paper ; long & useful. |

I'm not sure if you still can pick different options (valving-wise).
Anyway, in general any gas pressurized shock will give you a harsher ride compared to a only oil filled shock. Of course there is a trade off if going off road, etc. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

Why does a gas pressure shock give a harsher ride?
Incidentally, I messaged ARB the other day and they replied to say their new remote res OME BP 51 shocks are in development for Defender. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Yes you do have a slight disadvantage on the heat stakes... Have you thought of going remote reservoir if over heating is an issue? |

Yes I'm inclined to agree that remote shocks should in theory work better in the heat, however if it's 50C plus then everything that's not in the cab somer or later is at that temperature or more! In the pilbara there are quite mixed opinions about OME, Koni too! However truth is as I see it is time will tell, they are much better than OEM. The ride is better and they tow better and seem too cope with the heat!

UPDATE;
I spoke to Flatdog & explained what I was looking for....i.e a lowered defender by approx. 1 - 2" , softer front end on Polybushes on the Front ARB & a stiffer rear ARB coupled to a change of shocks & springs. Also going to stiffen up the drop links. Ben advised the OME shocks were not suitable & that I should go for Bilstein B6 shocks. So a phone call to Calum at Alive got me 4 x B6 shocks , 4 x Eibach springs & a steering damper for £710 delivered which I thought was a good deal. Thanks Callum. Just need to find time to fit them next. May your life be like toilet paper ; long & useful. |
