I remember seeing that, was it called the 'challenger' or something like that? Long time ago that was!

Yes... it was the Nene Overland "Auto Charger"... horrible; back in the day it was marketed like the twisted Defender of today - and supposed to look a bit SVX... and cost more than an original 50th back 8/9 years ago.
Took an age to get all that vinyl off... and sold on all the "bling" parts to fund the replacement "original" parts. Even had to do some interior changes; but it was suppressing how much spare change there was after selling the bits. Its got a few missing 50th parts... but closer to where it should be... but still as fun to drive. The black paint job was done by Nene; and in someway its slowed down the electrolytic corrosion. (still Atlantic blue inside!). Drives nice as is; but been busy refurbishing radius arms; trailing arms; A frame and panhard rod - ready for polybushes and the full Dinitrol treatment in a couple of weeks. Its kept in the dry; and used as a second vehicle so should last plenty more years yet. Was thinking galvanised chassis; but its still in reasonable condition - so not ready for that yet. Just need to find a local powder coater to sort the roll cage... I think black is best. |

All three pictures are the same vehicle...surprising how different they look - with a few minor changes

nice restore there, One thing, why "rework" a defender over, don't bother with a galvanised chassis, paint the inside too to match the out side. Then sell it on for a few quid! Is beyond me. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Nice to see someone un-blinging a Defender back closer to factory spec, it is usually the other way.
[still Atlantic blue inside!).[/quote] Do your funds run to having the outside re-sprayed in the original Atlantis Blue? That is a lovely colour. |

At some stage, I’d like to take it all back to the original state and colour (when it needs lots of bodywork doing); but some original parts are really hard to get and I may never find - and really I can't justify spending money now to paint it when it will still drive and feel exactly the same.
Being Java Black does make it different from the rest; the back and silver look works well. (badges and lights etc.). The Atlantis blue on the inside is well hidden - the doors are painted black inside; so its only inside the rear tub and seat box; but mostly these are covered in some sort of trim or carpet (or in the shade!) so not messing with my OCD too much. I have added some slight upgrades of my own like clear LED lights all round, TD5 bumper with end caps and TD5 Gloss style headlight surrounds that are not GB 50th spec (I looked at various grille combos - but settled on again a factory look.) It not being a 100% original 50th anymore means I can make changes to it without being afraid of ruining the originality - removing the bling and taking it back to factory; suits my personnel taste - it’s mine to enjoy! |

Not far from 50th spec by the look, good job and means you can enjoy it now without worrying about paint job being scratched etc!

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge This evening was spent trimming and fitting one of those eBay "Italian Leather" steering wheel cover kits, and I have to say I'm well chuffed. Can highly recommend; it is genuine leather (at least the smell is!) and I specified the colour and the actual defender wheel type and was assured it was made to measure; for £20 delivered can't fault it. (did take me a few hours to do!) Although I already have a black leather wheel on the 50th due to the original being removed back when Nene put a smaller sporty one on; the original was well gone - and rocking horse isn't easy to find... I've always been keen on getting the "look" back... and when a 36 spline wheel appeared on eBay for £25 delivered I thought I'd give it a go - not original but close enough for me and the satisfaction for getting a bargain and learning a new skill. Anyone who has a worn wheel or damaged leather - this really is a perfect solution; the wheel I bought off eBay was well worn where the rubber texture gets years of use - but you wouldn't know now |
