Long Range Fuel Tanks
Ciao,

I know this has been covered before but everything I searched came up with extra tanks for 110's

Does anyone know of any long range fuel tanks for the 90?

Well long range fuel tanks on a 90 is a challenge.

Had the 30l plastic fuel tank from Flatdog (Flatdog) fitted.

Pain in the arse to install but now get 400 miles between fill-up

Long Range Automotive in Australia manufacture two sill tanks for the Defender 90. I have had them install a 134 litre long range tank to my Defender 110 today. Excellent quality product.

The 90 "under the wheel arch" expansion tanks are OK albeit a bit misleading in terms of additional capacity. They replace the filler neck which normally holds around 5 litres so the 30 litre tanks actually gets you an extra 20-25 litres or thereabouts. In real terms, our rear tank went from 65 litres to 85 litres fill up after fitting one of these tanks.

Anther potential issue is that they don't like being used off road, they get caught by your tyres on full articulation and eventually develop a crack and start leaking... currently plucking up the courage to remove ours at the moment for that reason.

They are an absolute pain to fit and the benefit is debatable, there are easier ways to get an extra 20+ litres of fuel on board. I added a standard 300TDi tank under the driver's seat and that is cheaper, easier and more reliable as well as giving more fuel capacity. On a TD5 it means moving the electrics and ECU but on a Puma it's a lot easier.

They make access to the rear lights an absolute pain, ditto the standard load tie down rings in the rear.

It's a nice idea and not a bad design however, for the small amount of extra fuel there are a lot of downsides and unless you think it's absolutely necessary to carry every last drop of fuel, I wouldn't bother. i certainly wouldn't fit one again. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

when i looked into this a while back my conclusion for the money was to fit and earlier 90 underseat tank and plumb it into the filler of the std tank for filling with a Y piece and for transfer with second port and separate inline pump. give a switchable sender feed to the fuel gauge, one for each tank. Cheers

Hello Yannis

I too have looked at this several times...and keep coming back to my Jerry Can.

The 90 (from my research) has more limited options than the 110, and whilst potentially
you would free up the space internally (occupied by the Jerry Can)...for simplicity, and potentially
life expectancy over a Plastic 'hidden' long range tank, I think there is an argument for the simpler
solution.

The Puma 90 has (approx') a 56 Lt Tank (some debate here between 55 - 60 Lts... Confused )
which more or less gives a 300+ mile range (56 Lts / 12.3 Gallons @ 24 MPG)

A 20 Lt Jerry Can = 4.4 Gallons = 100+ Miles further range...(this for me is enough)

I have used mine on only two of occasions, once to avoid using a Motorway Service Station, when we had a fuel 'scare' in 2000 when from memory they were charging 10p / Lt more than 'normal'... and once to assist a motorist who had run out (Range Rover...in North Wales)... the 'movable' Jerry Can was therefore of more use (to help someone else) than if all the fuel was 'fixed' on-board.

Jerry Cans for the 90. Thumbs Up

I carried 5 in my camper trailer across Australia, and 3 more in the Defender. This gave me 160 Litres extra, the same a 4 fill up's... an additional 900Km! Cool YOLO... You Only Live Once...

Hello greenlandrover

I 'inherited' it from my wife's Father, but its origin is now unknown...it may be a Polish Jerry Can,
and is probably over 50 years old, based on what we know.

Aluminium Body, Handle and Spout, Steel Closure Mechanism and Steel Flexible Pouring Spout
with a bit of effort it would really polish up well, but its current 'satin' look with a few battle knocks
just looks right... really strong and being Ali' seams right for a Land Rover.

Maybe someone on here may know who made this... Question these are the only markings...
