Regarding the "hump" in the driver's footwell. I suppose this does not apply to left hand drive models as the hump will stay where it is. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Yes, it only affects the U.K./RHD models. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

I think they're very interesting vehicles (from a distance, never really seen one up close, nor sat inside).
I think because I have Defender tinted glasses, they look a bit odd to me, bordering on "I don't like it", but in some respects I like the fact that they are pushing the shape boundaries compared to the current breed of vehicles, which in my view all look the same. I had a sit in one at the dealer when I was up in Perth recently, didn't have time for a drive unfortunately. Looks very well built, is comfortable to sit in and I really like the rear cargo double door set up.
Things I don't like include the rear cargo wheel arches which need to be flat on top as the sloping sides are useless. Also the intrusion into the drivers footwell was a lot worse than I thought it would be and would put me off having one, I can't believe they couldn't have engineered it better. The fuel tank hangs way too low, and so has to have a substantial heavy duty bash guard fitted which further decreases the ground clearance and also adds to the hefty unladen weight. In some ways the vehicle seems over engineered with some parts too beefed up, which again adds to the weight. Overall, very impressive and well done to Ineos in bringing such a vehicle to the market, but with the current asking price ($120K AUD) and footwell hump, it would be a 'no' from me. |

I've heard that the Ineos guy is a super Defender fan and felt that nothing was better than the defender during its time etc etc but now this is the better version of today (in his opinion), I wonder however if there is not really such a thing as a "better defender", whilst trying to retain all the charms/quirks/loveable negatives of a defender?

It would be interesting to know where the extra weight comes from given that it is a good half a ton heavier than a new 110 defender.

A proper chassis and live axles will account for a fair amount. Isn't the current 110 largely aluminium? In which case the steel body will also account for quite a whack.

I presume as the Grenadier is a new modern vehicle it has to meet all requisite safety standards. Among these would be structural integrity in the event of a roll over. To accomplish this in the Defender a roll cage would be needed. So add in the weight of a roll cage to the Defender it would increase the vehicle's weight. It would also add to the cost of the vehicle but probably still below the Grenadier in both above cases.
As an expedition vehicle one of the strengths of the Defender was the amount of stuff it could carry, weight wise. This was due to it's construction which gave a lot of leeway weight wise for it's cargo. But if you factored in a roll cage and other modifications it's carrying capacity was lessened but probably it could still carry more weight wise than the Grenadier. Mr Ineos new that to get a vehicle like the Defender, he could not build it like for like, so he kept the basic idea and built it as close as possible to his ideal but adapted to comply with modern safety regulations. Whether he could have achieved this by making things lighter I do not know. To me the old Defender front seats were great with the bonus of the removable seat base. The Grenadier does not have seats like this and I would say the seats it has weigh a lot more than the Defender seats. So that is one area where extra weight went. It may not be much extra but if you do that with every component it soon adds up. I like the idea behind the Grenadier but there are things about it that would put me off buying one, including the price and the road tax. I assumed (dangerous I know) that camelman's reference to "a new Defender" meant a current L633, not a proper Defender. The L633 itself is already significantly heavier then a classic Defender as far as I know. |

Extra weight compared to what though? A quick google says a Mercedes G-Class is 2508kg with a 3.0 litre diesel. And is probably the closest in on paper spec and design. A Ford Ranger pickup is about 2400kg. The new Lexus GX550 is somewhere in the region of 2500-2600kg. All of these have a rear live axle and IFS, compared to live front/rear of the Ineos. I think it would also be fair to argue the Ineos uses very HD design in its axles and chassis and probably body tub, as it has no need for a rollcage to meet global roll over protection regs. Parkers says 2665kg for the Ineos. So it would appear to be bang on the money to comparable vehicles= when talking kerb weight. Lets also not forget a late model Discovery 2 is rated at 2335kg, so hardly much lighter in the grand scheme of things and considering the Discovery 2 is 25+ years older in design with a smaller wheelbase and less HD build. As for the current Defender, please don't take it the wrong way, as I'm not bashing, just making a statement/observation. The current model is basically an AWD tall estate car. I know the structure is strong, but it is not built in the same way at all. The Ineos is something can could easily be converted into a mobile crane, tipper truck or lots of other things. The new Defender is not built to be able to cater for anything like that. BTW, Parkers claim an X-Dyanmic D300 110 is 2431kg, where are you getting half a tonne from?? They also say a same spec 130is 2591kg. |
