England 2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SVX Soft Top Santorini Black
Main Light Switch
I know this is a well documented weakness in the defender but I have query regarding the speed at which these switches 'burn out'

2 weeks ago my SVX developed the problem with no lights when the switch is in the full on (dipped) position, but one click back (sidelights) still worked fine.
Stalk still worked fine as was able to flash full lights.

After consulting this fine forum I gathered it was probably the switch at fault, so sourced a replacement one.
Opted for a Lucas one (not the cheapest - Britpart and certainly not the most expensive - Land Rover)

Again this forum gave me pointers on how to change it, which went without issue and sorted the problem. Very Happy

HOWEVER......
It has been only 3 days following replacement and the problem has recurred Big Cry

Does this mean I have a short in the wiring elsewhere Confused or have been unlucky with my replacement item. Crying or Very sad Matt,

They can last from 10min to 10 years... its down to luck..

Only way to find out is to get a multimeter and test the amps going through the pins on the light switch socket, should be around 13-15 amps I recon but not really sure exactly.

My record is 0 min ... Shocked

After mine burned out, the new replacement I bought (non genuine) was dead on arrival... So bought the proper one, and installed a wiring loom with relays at the same time.. This was 8 years ago, and still all good (though I must say I now have all LED lights all around). Thumbs Up Cheers, Vincent

As per others...
Can last 1 week, 5 months or a year or 2.
To solve it I installed a loom with relays around 1 year ago and no more problems. Very happy Smile Eduardo
