I think now it is best not to do this, you will lose the vehicle and go to prison. I was catched in my youth at 171kph and was let go but now it would be prison and big money. Also from January 2018 they will be contacting your DVLA for sure. They are becoming very more agressive now with strangers. My police friend say the worst people are the Belgian driver and the British not too bad but they take a Lamborgini one month ago and it is scheduled to be destroyed  |

Suggest you come and do that here Greeni. Depending on how blistering your speed was, you may get from a minimum of 1 year to up to 5 years of three free meals per day on account of the Swiss tax payer. But no high tea with scones included. 
Now that I come to think of it, they may even require that you as a foreigner contribute to pay for all those meals. 
And they will take really good care of your GT3, to the point that you will never see it back.

I'm not exactly sure how I know this next bit of info (ahem) but the French authorities have brought in a new rule to target Foreign speeders, whether or not France has an agreement in place. If you are caught driving in excess of a certain amount of the given speed limit (for example 30kmh - 40kmh), which will have incurred points in France (3 in the example given), they will now fine you the same amount as the French on the spot (135€ - they can do this by CC in the van), take your licence off you and in-lieu of points ban you from driving in Metropolitan France with immediate effect for three months. Your licence will be returned to your home address by post. Your car can be driven by a third party immediately, but if you are solo it will be impounded and you will pay a daily rate until its collection. Further you will receive a court summons and likely be fined another 500€. Failure to attend will mean a longer ban and risk of prison/car-destruction/both if you return to France. As such, if you want to speed and pay cash over and over, fine, make sure you know the speeding limits below. Also, work on the assumption that Gendarmes will be everywhere and also work to the letter of the law in areas of high tourist usage (such as here in Cham, absolute cash-cow) and be less visible/officious in dead parts of the country. As I said, I have no idea how I know all this, but I can assure you it is bang up to date. Perhaps as recently as three weeks ago...
***TOP TIP FOR BRIT EXPATS: If you fall foul of this proceedure, do NOT give them a French address, make sure you say your primary address is in the UK or else they will make you also swap to a French licence and destroy yours. They lost mine, so I was lucky and got a new British licence, but others are now on French licences and liable to points/bans etc!!!*** I can also confirm Switzerland is a b**ch. Again, cannot confirm exactly how I know....

Grenadier, what are you saying there about Switzerland? I do not recognise anything correct in there. We don't have licenses with a points system here, we have different fines and different license suspension rules than what you mention there. 3 years suspension does not exist here, but once you drive more than a certain nbr of kmh too fast, we do have the law of "délit de chauffard". Those excess kmh are not a fixed, but change for different driving situations. For instance on the highway when speed limit is 120 kph, if your are clocked at 170 or more after a small deduction, your car gets confiscated, you go to court where the judge by law has to give you a minimum jail sentence of 1 year. He cannot do less, as the federal law for délit de chauffard does not allow him to do so. Car gone forever, minimum 1 year jail time, plus all the hefty fines on top. And that applies to speeding foreigners too. In the case where a foreigner is clocked for délit de chauffard, and he is able to still leave the country, the Swiss authorities will ask the car owners home country to extradite him.
Several such well publicised cases in the works here right now. A German caught speeding and repeatedly illegal overtaking in the Gothard tunnel was stopped. His expensive car was confiscated, but somehow he was still able to quickly get back to Germany without his car. He was convicted in absence to 1 year effective jail time, and the Swiss have asked Germany to extradite him. Now Germany never extradite their citizens, so the Swiss now asked the Germans to arrest him and put him for a year in a German jail. Unlikely to happen, so best that gent can do is not cross the border anymore, because at the first chance the Swiss police will arrest him and lock him up. Now another recent case is of a Swiss hitting on the highway the official car of our conseiller fédéral Schneider-Amman at the silly speed of 220 kph. This guy will be judged shortly and get a minimum of 1 year effective jail time, but the judge could give him up to 4 years free meals. Link below. We indeed think that real excessive speeding is not funny anymore, irrespective if it is us Swiss, or you foreigners. So beware. My SVX with its standard tune generally helps to avoid such issues, at least on our highways. As you mention the French gendarmes targeting foreign cars now, that is nothing new. I had the experience 10 years ago on the way from home to La Clusaz, where two French gendarmes with binoculars were checking if cars getting off the highway came to a full stop or just slowed down at a stop sign. At the roundabout where they were hiding, they only stopped all offenders with a foreign registration, but let all the French who did not stop pass. We ended up in the queue after a Belgian, a Dutch, a German, a U.K. to each pay our 90€. I swore there on the spot that this would be two times in one, the first and the last, that I would pay any French tax. It has not happened anymore either, I won't drive a single km too fast there, and will stay at least 5 seconds immobile at a stop sign. But not more than that either or they will fine us for obstruction du trafic.

It is not new this rule about to fine and if it would be a banning to take the licence and impound the car if there is not another person there who can show they can to drive legally (insurance etc) the car they can. This is in fact is a bit of the old rule because now they can keep the car if the offence if big enough and you do not expect this vehicle back.
Personally i do not like when a strange come and ignore the rules, the limit is more in france then most places with 130kph. It is generous compared to 112kph in UK no? British always compline first about "jonnie foreigners bloke" behaviour in UK so please do not do this driving like this in France because we already fill the roads with our own home grown  drivers - part of our traditions! |

It seems that the French speeding tickets do make their way home, these days.
I´ve driven over from Germany (through France) several times in the last 18 months in various fast machines. Always keeping to my less than ten over the speed limit policy. However, the only time I got flashed by a camera was in the Defender in March this year, when I failed to notice a 90 Kmh sign. I was only doing 107 Kmh, but the fine turned up at my doorstep in Germany only six weeks later. It would appear that the Germans are now cooperating with their EU neighbours. Several years ago, a parking ticket I collected in Cambridge made its way over the channel, and went up from 35 quid to 96 euros. My personal survival policy.... Germany - less than 20 Kph too fast - keeps you out of the points France - less than 10 Kph seems to work Switzeland - stay a couple of Kmh below the posted limit Austria - if you look or sound fast, they might well find a reason to book you 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

had speed camera in Dorset that flashed and recorded speed 150 mile hr on car going by, but all case thrown out court, tunes out speed camera installed incorrect when it show long line car, van and lorry all speeding at 8.30am school day as it pointed out that you will lucky to get up 5 miles hr as its bump to bump from 8.00 am to 9.30am

I think there was something similar a few years back in Suffolk on the A140 at Stonham. Fixed penalty notice sent out to a driver going over the 30mph speed limit. Just as well the driver was in a coach with a tachograph which proved otherwise. Who knows how many other tickets got sent. They then removed the speed camera.
