More work continues...
... we took out the entire wiring loom, steering column and foot pedals, then came removing the bulkhead which was the last piece of bodywork to come off.

Any advice on what to do with it now and who can do the work would be much appreciated please.

Our thoughts are that it needs a bit of welding here and there, shot blasting and then probably galvanising. is that correct?

Can you successfully spay paint on to treated galv and expect it to adhere properly? Alistair at Richards Chassis said his advice was not to paint the new galv chassis. Car manufactures do these days don't they?

Questions questions - thanks for the answers. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Hope you enjoy the progress;

To try to answer your questions -

Media blast or chemical strip to remove paint and rust. Weld areas which need it. Galvanising can be a bit hit and miss, sometimes the part comes back ok other times (depending on who's doing it) parts can come back a mess. I have galvanised bulkheads before and its worth speaking with the galvanisers explaining what your expectations are. Due to the metal being quite thin in places such as the foot wells it can warp.

Galvanised metal can be painted but needs to be treated with mordant solution first which will give the paint a good key.

Bulkhead has been of to a great chap who has made an amazing job of the welding repairs, its now in great shape soon to be off for galvanising.

Battery box is in a sorry state, not sure what to do with that yet, any advice?

Cappings all removed and welded ready for the galvy treatment al well.

Why are the cappings different from Landrover to Landrover?

On my Puma they're all one piece of metal, on this one they were in 3 bits each two welded together at the front, and on others they are in three bit but all welding together?

Strange, but I wanted them welded to offer greater strength to the back of the tub.

Now it is mostly striped, attention has been turned to cleaning, rubbing down, treating and recoating all the little bits off the car. This has all been done by my father.

With all that going on I have been working on all the steel parts of the bodywork that needed shot blasting in preparation for galvanising;

Off to be shot!

Back from the blaster, but need to be kept dry so neatly perched in my lounge!!!

The shot blasting process has shown a couple of further area's of rot in the bulkhead that we weren't aware of, so next week a bit more welding required. It was a shame to see the damage, but much better to know of it now and deal with it with ease Thumbs Up

Yesterday the old rusty chassis rolled for the last time.

Back axle off

Front axle off

It will rest here until the new one arrives, hopefully next week, and we can be sure we don't need any of the old bits.

The rear cross member was new a couple of years ago and is in very good shape. I will cut that off and sell it.

During the process of dismantling we have come up with a design modification that we think will much improve radial arm bush wear.

A high powered pressure washer and a bottle of GUNK certainly make short work of 30 year of grease, grime and mud!
