When did "mother" become a gender-specific term?

Is not a "mother" a person who has borne a child? The act of bearing the child creates the state of motherhood. As I see it, a male who bears a child would be a male mother.

I accept that it is conventional to think of mothers as being female, but that is simply because thousands of years of natural evolution has conditioned us to do so.

Incidentally, are there any male child-bearers in nature? I am not aware of any, I think that it is a humans-messing-about-with-nature creation, but I may be wrong.

Seahorses.

So is a woman who adopts a child not a mother? The word "mother" was invented by humans and is defined as a woman in reltion to her child - not thousands of years of evolution.

As for humans messing about with nature - lets just scrap medicine altogether and we can all die without some meddling doctor shoving a new pair of kidneys in us or curing an infection or cancer, or stopping us bleeding to death when we've put (insert sharp pointy power tool here) through our hands. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews

No mamal does, but these male animals do the Syngnathidae family (pipefish, seahorses and the leafy seadragon), in all these species males perform this function. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Am I totally fed up with this:-
http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/news/a820062/...aving-sky/
If Sky and Discovery don't kiss and make up it looks like no more Wheeler Dealers, no more Deadliest Catch, no more Chasing Classic Cars and no more Eurosport.

Come on Guys, I've only just managed to get me Sky Q working properly, and you do this to me?

My TV life is over. I will have to retreat from the Bedroom TV back into the Living Room and watch Coronation Street, Holby and "oh, that's a new Actor / Actress I haven't seen before, they must be about to get some kind of gruesome injury" - Casualty.

I can live without my telly in the summer, but during the winter it's going to be purgatory Shocked

Geordie Shores, The only way is Essex, Made in Chelsea..............

I will be sitting in the Defender having a sulk, if you need me Big Cry

Its been doing the rounds since last week - if you look at what sky are saying Discovery are being a little bit extreme

Personally there are a few good programmes, but they are going down hill...they need sky for reach too none of the others can bring the cash to the party. Mike

And whilst I have the soap box handy, is the only reason the BBC keep Casualty and Holby City going, so they can give work to all of those Actors and Actresses from soap land who can't get a Gig?

It's like watching a who's who of Soap luvvies. About as predictable as Mike Brewer (I didn't mean it Mike, I'm going to miss you and Ed!! )

Farmerben, we (me and the current Mrs Rashers) got Sky because we live in black hole for TV reception so Freeview is but a distant dream. Broadband is of a questionable speed (hey, thanks BT) whilst everywhere around us has fibre, we are still using wet string and two golden syrup tins (naturally, washed out).

Laurie, you have nailed yet another nail in the TV coffin. No Le Mans, no winter sports. Well at least Sky show lots of Football. It's just a crying shame they pay a shed load of money for something that doesn't interest me.

Oh and Sky has the boring procession which is Formula 1. Let's hope the new owners inject some life into it.

F1 should have fueling, tyres and almost go as fast as you can approach - that was always fun and if the race was boring, pit stops used to be fun Mike
