^^ Idiot behind me tonight on the lane into the village. Full beam all the time except when a car came the other way and he dipped them - straight back onto full beam after oncoming car had gone.
He looked a bit puzzled when I pulled over to let him past ....... but soon found out why - don't think he enjoyed full beam Nightbreaker 110%'s lighting up the road in front of him through his car ![]() Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

Have to agree with MOG about the Darwinians who park on your side of the road with the headlights on. Then there's the incorrectly set headlights, if they work at all. I do so love those that don't dip their headlights especially when I have time to reach across to activate the roof lights so when I do the reminder flash they get the full force of 4x100w spots plus the 100% brighter main beam, they seem to get the message then.

One of the nice things about having an IW canopy with a solid rear flap is that this behaviour is far less of a problem! I really don't miss the internal mirror at all, and in fact I find driving at night with a rear window and interior mirror disturbingly unpleasant.
Since it is not only illegal to stop on the wrong side of the road during the hours of darkness, but also illegal to have your headlights on when stationary (unless stopped in traffic), or to have your headlights on when reversing, it would be rather pleasing if these morons were sometimes prosecuted. Trouble is that would require real live traffic enforcement officers (not cameras) who knew the law and who cared. Mind you, many's the time when I have seen Police vehicles parked up with the lights on. |

Never knew about headlights and reversing! What piece of legislation is being infringed there? Brendan |

I find it amazing on how out of touch with the real world some, sorry most drivers are. Where I live I have to travel narrowish lanes, most of the time you can squeeze two cars past at slow speed but you can spot the locals as they generally pull in to the passing places and keep the flow of the traffic going with no need for anyone to back up. When I see another motor coming I know whether there's a passing spot closer to me or them and pull in or keep going as appropriate, at night I'll put my lights down to sidelights when I pull in, that way the car that's still travelling has not got glare from my lights and makes their passing easier as they know where I am and I've stopped. I can remember my father doing this when I was an impressionable youngster back in the days when manners were a way of life not like the novelty they are now.
The other thing was how many people actually turn off their headlights when reversing, it does make things a little easier. |

Headlights on when stationary is prhobited by the regulation 27 of the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations. I cannot now remember where the reversing prohitbition used to originate, it may have been something like the Road Vehicles Lighting (Supplementary Regulations) Regulations which I can no longer find any mention to, and which have probably now been revoked (absorbed no doubt by amendments to the RVLR). Parking facing oncoming traffic at night (irrespective of lights) is prohibited under both C&U regs and reg 24 of RVLR. It is very difficult to keep up with UK traffic law and construction and use type regs at the moment, and several areas are very poorly defined. The problems seem to originate from the that fact that Europe now sets the law, and we cannot legally prohibit anything that Europe allows (subject to certain exceptions). This results in oddities such as front fog lights - it has always (for very sensible reasons) been illegal to use front fog lights in clear conditions in the UK, and for about the last 50 years they have had to be used in matched pairs. Now however under European law cars can have this idiotic feature where one fog light lights up as you go round corners. Clearly illegal under UK regulations but allowed under European law. It is illegal for the UK to make it illegal! |
