With a expanding family the roof tent is not cutting the space any more. Love the tent but decided not to go down the rout of a bigger one so thinking of adding one of the two options

We got an Oztent from Brendan, and toured round the UK last summer.
I really like the tent. we have an Oztent RV4 with all the extras. We fitted 2 adults, 1 child and 2 dogs no problem for 3 weeks. The quality is very good..but you would expect that for the money. If I was forced to point out an issue with the Oztent, then that would be its not very good when its blowing a gale of wind, but thats down to the shape and nothing to do with the quality. Oztent looking the front runner at the moment

long! will just fit in the back of mine if rests on floor (where 2nd row passenger feet go) at 45deg angle over 2nd row seats back (top rests on dog guard) too long to go in width wise. mine travels on trailer or rack when there is no roof tent on it.

Another vote for Oztent from me. I've had an RV4 for 10+ years and recently added an RV1 which might end up as an occasional roof tent. They are expensive to acquire, but last a long time, and their second-hand values aren't much lower than the new prices. The weaker £ has an upside for people selling them second hand...
Click image to enlarge The photo shows an RV4 and fly sheet with a front panel and a side awning (linked to the trailer). The fly sheet isn't essential for waterproofness but reduces the internal temperature in summer and makes the tent darker in the mornings (good if you're allowed a lie-in  ). Some people say that Oztents suffer from condensation but I've never had any problems with or without the fly - probably because we keep the tent well ventilated.

RV4 = 200cm (l) x 29cm (w) x 18cm (h) That is just for the basic tent. Accessory items such as front/side/awning/fly won't fit into the main bag but are supplied with their own bags. http://www.oztent.com/Product%20Datasheets...asheet.pdf |

Will still be using the roof tent and full truck now so size may be the against however thinking the oztent looks better.

Compared to the main tent, the fly, sides etc takes up very little space...

Also must state "vested interest" upfront!
The Awning Room is a useful & affordable, simple piece of equipment, designed to very quickly convert an awning into a full tent. It's useful as your awning is already mounted on your vehicle and the room is just a smallish stuff sack, that's easy to fit in your Defender. Versatlity & ease of storage is what we like about the awning rooms. Its a very useful bit of kit. Downsides? 1. You need to have an awning (obviously  ). 2. You need to slope your awning downward in heavy rain to give some pitch for run off. 3. It's not self supporting so obviously you can't drive away as you would with a fully featured, stand alone ground tent like an Oz tent or the Howling Moon Whizz tent etc! We have some new ideas coming soon though...

Hadn't considered the wiz tent but could be a option as a little cheaper but guessing this comes at a price.
Was ready to press the button on one of your awning rooms Dara but started thinking about space with two kids and using it to sleep eat etc as well as the advantage of leaving camp pitched when away as this seams our primary camping at the moment. However the oz tent does come with storage issues when using a roof tent as well 
Ideally awning and oztent I think but that's getting expensive! So many more options and makes than when I got the roof tent a good few years ago although drawbacks with flexibility on the roof love it and would not change now |

ARB do a great awning room add-on, it has a floor and is easy to set up clips to side poles and zips to front

Thought about a tipi tent ?
Smallish pack size & easy set up & also take a stove if needed.  |

I want it attached to the truck really as a couple of the sites I use charge per tent and speaking to them if it's attached it's one tent where as a sperate tent would be double!
