They stopped advising ATF several years ago. Most people now use MTF94, although someone on here (blackwolf maybe?) Is an advocate of something different, (castrol syntrans rings a bell)

is the clutch adjusted and bled correctly? That will make a bigger difference than oil if the clutch isnt dis engaging fully.

LT230 EP 80w 90 axle/ Diff EP 80w 90 clutch in good order how meany miles on clock ? at 100,000 my 2003 90 had new clutch, as the old one down to the rivets and clutch pressure plate fingers worn-out and one broken now changes gear on good order |

What are the latest thoughts on this I find my TD5 does not like 1st to 2nd gear changes for the first couple of miles after that all the changes are good.
This makes me think maybe the oil is to viscous when cold? I see Ashcroft still support ATF Dexron 111 as a better oil will this solve my problem? Has anybody else had good results using ATF Dexron 111 2016 Defender Landmark 90 2005 Defender CSW TD5 90XS |

Not me, I always put MTF94 in my R380. It too is very different when cold compared to warm. When cold 1st to 2nd needs to be very quick, when warm it is a typical LR slow change. I've always found this normal on an R380, it seems to be how they are. To be honest I don't rate the box very highly and think it is possibly the worst gearbox ever fitted to a proper Landrover. The MT82 box is vastly superior but the way it's connected to the engine is dire. There was a time when Landrover knew how to do clutches and gearboxes but that seems to have been forgotten. |

Sure MTF94 is Honda oil just to add to the parts bin.

My R380 gearbox has done 65000 miles.
I will try a faster gear change when cold as Blackwolf does as i have tended to try and change slower to avoid the crunch. I agree about the MT82 a shocking amount of drive back lash for a more modern gearbox has anybody driven a transit with this box is it the same? 2016 Defender Landmark 90 2005 Defender CSW TD5 90XS |

Great, looks like syntrax is the right stuff for the transfer box.
Thanks |

The backlash isn’t in the gearbox, it’s in the adaptor shaft between the gearbox and the transferbox, and in the props, and the diffs and the half shafts and the clutch too if that’s worn. The actual ford gearbox is fine, none of the Ford vehicles have the sloppy Land Rover bits on them. Then the extra torque from the puma engines makes all the Land Rover bits including the clutch wear faster. |

Thank you ZSD Puma for educating me on this issue.
You would think then that somebody would be able to manufacture a shaft with tighter tolerances to partially eliminate this problem for sure it would be a good seller. I agree about the rest of the drive train certainly more stressed with Puma power and torque especially with a BAS 170 tune. 2016 Defender Landmark 90 2005 Defender CSW TD5 90XS |
