I have a decat and a very small cherry bomb rear box on my TD5.
It gives a lovely sound without any droning. No remap on mine and it is fine. Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

The manifold can be left standard. De-cat and straight thru can be fitted at any time at any stage of tune. You'll get a nice bark from it! It's not too loud but long journeys on the motorway do become a bit more tiring is the only downside! Best to keep the rear most silencer fitted though, removing it does make it sound awesome but it is loud haha
Keep the original cat though as you may need it for the MOT, neither of my TD5s have needed it but you never know! |

Lovely, Thanks All!
I'll get these ordered then, seem good enough quality. I'll hang fire on the replacing the backbox until I see how it sounds with just these added. Silencer Removal Pipe http://www.terrafirma4x4store.co.uk/TF_exhaust/TF554_silencerpipe De-Cat Pipe https://www.flatdoguk.com/-discovery~264 |

Mine never had a cat due to being too old, I have now got a straight thru centre as well. Leaving the rear box in, I think it would get a bit much without it!
I don't notice much of an increase in cabin noise on the motorway. Can hear it under throttle though. I think the extra length of a 110 helps here, the end of the exhaust is a long way from my ears! My obligatory video link: |

Mine has the cat, with a full stainless Alive setup with mid-box delete, and its far too quiet, I can't really tell a difference to standard

I first removed the middle silencer from my 2003 90 td5. That gave already a better sound. Later when I was able to remove the nuts from the turbo so I could get away with the Cat. That really made a difference. Nice turbo wistle etc. (when the rear door is open)
![]() I still have the rear silencer in place. It is tuned and hardly smokes under load. Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

I removed the CAT from my 2005 TD5.
It made the turbo spool up quicker, pretty much eliminating the lag when you put your foot on the gas. Sadly there was also a tiresome droning at 2500-3000rpm on the motorway and after 12 months l fitted a new CAT pipe. It's quieter now but the "TD5 lag" is back. Since then l've had a remap which had made the engine quieter at motorway speeds (?) So l may try again with the decat pipe. |

I had a centre silencer removal pipe on my first Td5, (no cat, too early but a decent re-map,) it made a great sound but not too loud, however, in preparation for a long trip down to Spain, I refitted the centre box to minimise the amount of droning noise at speed, as soon as I set off I realised it was a mistake and regretted it, the noise was reduced a little but the performance was significantly diminished.
It's surprising how quickly you get used to a performance tweak and then take it for granted so it seems a huge loss without it, first thing I did on my return was to remove the centre box again, the reduction of back pressure makes the turbo spool up a whole lot quicker. |

Same results as Clive, my 110 has a stage 1 map and when first done the exhaust system was standard. I really noticed an improovement when I took the middle box out but when I replaced the front pipe for an earlier model spec without the cat it transformed the motor, it was like getting a new map on it. Every year I used to put the original downpipe back on for the MoT, it's a good friend that tests it and I didn't want to be the one whose motor was on the ramp when the man from VOSA turned up when he's turning a blind eye to the fact that the cat is missing. The day or two running the 110 with the cat back on was painfull, there was a huge difference in the performance so before I put the cat back on the following year I slit it open with the grinder, took the innards out and welded it back up empty so it now complies with the visual check. The can is completely empty and has quietened the booming that could be a little wearing on long motorway trips.

Roel that sounds bang on!
Thanks for all the feed back, de-cat and centre silencer removal it is. It pulls lovely due to the remap thats on it so hoping for a little more would be a bonus! Droning doesnt bother me too much if im honest, used to it from decatted jap crap with endless popping and banging ![]() |

Yep, l found the 110 performed better without the CAT but the booming/droning got to me on longer motorway trips. l don't have the skills to strip out the CAT and close up the casing though. Were you running without the centre box as well as CAT removal? |
