This sounds more like a VCV problem than EGR but the best way to prove it now the problem is back is to remove the connector from the EGR valve. It will mean the EGR will/should remain shut all the time and you will get a MIL light come on after a few starts but ignore that as it will have no other noticeable effect to performance but if you are still getting erratic idle problems and occasional lack of throttle response then its most likely to be the VCV. "You are never to old to learn something new"

Sounds like classic faulty VCV symptoms. If you search for volume control valve within these forums you'll find other with these symptoms which were relieved by a swap of the part and a fuel pump re-learn. I had one changed at Landranger which failed after a couple of years. Apparently the replacement pets vary in quality and you want to be replacing it with a Denso brand one. Also referred to as a suction valve and a fuel control valve. You can diy the swap with an average socket set but access is a bit of a Censored , it helps if you've got child sized hands. You then need to a computer to tell the ECU to relearn the characteristics of the fuel pump, a bought a cheap ass one called a Foxwell on a bit of a limb and it indeed had this function and worked well. The guy who is Bell Auto Services was extremely generous with his time and expertise over the phone and I believe he sells replacement valves and his reprogramming tool can also perform the fuel pump relearn
