Rear Crossmember Replacement
Decided my 1999 TD5 crossmember needed repacing after removing the seatbelt support bar on the back this is what was left!

the compression tubes fell out & the jacking points wern't up to much glad I'd never had to use them. The othe side looks better but was splitting apart & I hadn't knocked the rust off.

This had been 'Professionally Waxoiled' when it was 18months old & then taken back to the same guy 2 1/2 years ago no sign of the waxoil here

and here. He offers a 5year guarantee!!!

the strengtheners under the floor had none (a bad corrosion point on my series)

as the top of the chassis at the back

so after some research I decided on using Black Sheep Off Road for one of there HD crossmembers

they are produced out of 6mm material and don't need the water trap box section will out last the rest of the chassis

The guys work is amazing (I work for a welding & fabricating co.). Lot of time taken painstakingly custom making every part to fit perfect nothing too much trouble & even cut the floor strentheners to leave the hole required to remove the fuel pump!

Looks very good! Did they remove the rear floor to get full access or had you already done that?

Don't you mean who didn't waxoil it? Can't mention his name or company as last time he got a bit upset on here, but he's suppose to be a Land Rover specialist and thinks that the corrosion could be 'plated'. The two waxoiling treatments only cost £950 so you shouldn't expect too much I suppose

That welding is lush. Far better than the factory finish!

I thought he had stopped doing stuff on landies but its good to hear he is alive and well. Does he do a full range of rear x members or just TD5's? 1951 80" S1 2.0

Bob

The pictures don't do it justice, the welding isn't just better than factory, it's better than almost all of the welding I have seen. (and I see welding nearly every day). Bob you won't regret it, just get there sooner than later so there's good metal to weld to on the chassis and it doesn't need cutting back further. Thumbs Up
