hi,
You can make the thing very very awkward (but definitely not impossible) to remove using 2x regular heavy chain locks tightly wrapped around it and the rack (chain means you can get it pretty tight and put a padlock through the right links for a given tension...). With my rack you would then be able to painstakingly wriggle it out (but would take forever and almost certainly damage the tent). If you had all round luggage rails or the oz tent basket preventing forward and backwards movement you could then really lock it "in" rather that "on" if that makes sense. Cheers Joe |

I've used a push bike cable and padlock.

We use a Thule Evolution 500 ski box. A RV4 with floor saver, side and front panels will all fit in - just. Advantage is that it keeps it dry, secure and protects it from damage from low branches etc. Top of the box got quite scuffed in the Lake District last month! Also dust proof which was useful in the Pyrenees last summer.

I attach it with Titan straps from 4x4Overlander and secure it with a bike lock through the rack.

Just be careful NOT to over tighten and damage any of the tent internal mechanisms that can bend from being over tighten with ratchet straps and such. Adventure isn't paved!

^ Indeed, take care not to damage the internal frame.
I used these rubber straps, just the perfect length to give secure fit without risking to overtighten. I bought these off my Oz tent dealer here in Holland.  for rubber straps (same as above). We use four to secure our Oztent RV4 and accessories bag to our Flatdog rax. No issues travelling from the UK to Italy this year.

So I went for a couple of cheap ratchet straps in the end. Seemed to work just fine for this weekend's camping trip to the New Forest. When I was tightening them up I did have a feeling that something inside might easily bend so I loosened them off a little.
I now have another OZTent / camping question - Anyone got any views on the OZTent floor saver mesh for £92.00? or spend £20 on a tarp for under the tent and £20 on some tent carpet (the mesh type) for in the awning bit? (rough prices). Thanks Neil |

Not got the mesh one but we have the solid footprint.
Excellent bit of kit which allows you to position the tent exactly where you lay the footprint. Yep, probably a bit expensive, but it also protects the sleeping area floor from undesirable things in the ground. Not sure what protection the mesh would provide, if any? Brendan or Barbara (Leeds) are your people for OzTent questions. Would have bought ours from them had we not got a deal on a 2nd hand spotless one at Peterborough last year. Seems a shame to spend all that money on a Tent, then buy a £20 tarp for the ground. |

We bought the standard floor saver. In hindsight we wish we bought both standard and mesh. It all depends on what ground you're camping on. The standard one is great for wet and dry grass but not so good for some of the dry gravel/dirt/ sandy pitches we encountered in France. We found ourselves constantly sweeping the tent out.

I use a caravan awning groundsheet with my RV4 that goes underneath the main tent and provides a floor for the front covered section. It was a lot cheaper than £92! Darren

I have an RV4 Floor Saver (the waterproof type) that I don't use so if anybody wants one, send me a PM for a deal. It'd be 20cm too narrow for an RV5 though.

If you are travelling on corrugated roads or over rough ground we would suggest something scraficial between basket and tent. Corrugated roads can cause items to vibrate/move and possibility of wearing holes in tent or bag. Better to wear a hole in a piece of old carpet or camping mat rather then tent.
