Hola MK,

Answer your questions (In english to be polite with our british friends ) Regarding the guarantee: 100,000 km or 3 years, the thing that last first. It is hard to believe that a clutch can be broken after 38,000 km of use, in special when you have experience in driving manual gear cars. Broken clutch by driving in general happens to non experience beginners. By protocol the damaged piece (if is not a guarantee item) should be returned to the client, so, if you have it (I hope) you can take a look and you can show it to an specialist to have a 2nd opinion. In general, If the clutch looks burned (the plate looks black like metal exposed to high temperatures), that is your fault. But if something is broken inside, its a material fail and should be replaced under guarantee. If I remember well there is a SMM stating a failure in the clutch and provide a replacement piece for that. Mine was replaced at the 42,000 km, and now, with more than 100,000 km is still in good shape. At the beginning the dealer also stated that was a drivers problem (was the most taught figth that I had with the dealer). Finally and with the help of some friend of this forum with the same problem the dealer accepted to change the clutch under warranty. So, my advice is: If you have the old clutch look it, request a second opinion, get the SMM and go again to the dealers to request a money refund. If they dont accept to refund the money, send a letter to Land Rover stating the situation. A burned friction plate could be the result of a faulty pressure plate an not necessarily due to bad driving. Google is good tough Puma 110" SW

Yea,
Your rigth, my recomendation assumed that the presure plate and all the other componets sorrounding the clutch are in a good shape. Anyway, a broken piece inside for sure is not a driver's fault, so it is the easy case to demostrate. The burned plate is more arguable and a problem in the pressure plate should be demostrate to free the driver responsability . Cheers! Actually it is the friction plate and not the pressure plate which gets damaged. Both, the latter and the flywheel tend to show some effects of excesive slippage, like sigmoid-shaped marks and dark coloured surface. Puma 110" SW

As I said,
Assuming that the pressure plate is working correctly (despite that showing some damage or not) In our case at least was quite easy to demostrate the clutch failure (spring out of the plate) Cheers Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

Hello Guys,
Thanks for the quick and amount of response. !!!! Thanks for the tip on the warranty issue. Im sure now that my andy is still in warranty. and also all the rest of explanations and tips. About the failure Im not so sure what caused it. The pieces are full of black dust ( indication for burning ) and the friction plates are totally gone. one side is nearly completly gone. Its arguable what did it, I can only assume a material failure in my case. I do tow quite a lot of trailers, small boats, trailer charged with cement or stones. max 1,5 t, garden materials and tools etc. Ill see what ill do about the warranty claim. a letter to land rover stating the case with a bill i think is the best. here are some pix. high five. you guys are cool!!!!! 2009 Defender 110 SW |

I have had many things replaced the clutch is not one of them, 160thou miles towing all the time still on the first clutch. I'me with feket here bit of driver error possibly creeping in here, i never hold the car on a hill thats what the hand brake is for, never sit for ages foot on the clutch spinning the release bearing and spiggot bearing and i double de clutch on the way down the gears a la old lorry driver crash box. Clutch is in or out simple as that never slip it, thats what you've got low range for.
My P38 Range Rover has just started slipping at 140thou but i did not own it for its first 30thou of life If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. That one is really F...... You should probably check if the flywheel is within tolerance. What colour is the central teflon hub on the other side? (black or white) Puma 110" SW
