As already described, on my LHD one the cabin air intake is moved to the side opening. Also a short and direct 78 mm tube, and no danger of issues with snow or leaves. When i bought the vehicle, the zyclone fliter had a painted housing. i later fitted a clear one, and am always surprised by how much debris ends up caught in the filter "bowl". Rather have it there than blocking the air filter element. Open wing nut, tip out the debris, and all is good! The only other real options for those of us with Roll Cages are the original Mantec RAI and the protection and performance RAI. The latter I have and I am very happy with the quality of it. Has a 3" tube and wing mount. Down side is that P&P have not taken it one step further and continued their system on to the airbox. Another issue albeit a small one is that their RAI has been designed for their cages and hence the fixing tabs do not align with the SD cage I have... There is also the Southdown snorkel which can be fitted with a cage at Ģ159.
Again fully sealed through to the airbox You down have to cut your wing but if you've just bolted a cage to your truck and drilled holes all over the body that's not too much of an issue . It's also relatively 'subtle' Click image to enlarge |

It is true that a snorkel or RAI will, other things being equal, restrict airflow more than not having an RAI.
- the longer the pipe, the more restriction there will be, - the smaller the pipe, the more restirction there will be. The most significant restriction on airflow on a standard TDCi is the pathetic pipe from the OE wing side intake to the airbox. This is massively restricted, and quite honestly whatever you do is unlikely to make much difference with this pipe still in place. It also leaks like a seive since it has many poorly-fitting joins. The reason I chose the Nakatanenge RAI was because it was the only one which eliminates this pipe - it replaces it with one with a CSA about 5 times the original. The Nugget Duct does the same job, but is slightly more restricted than the Nak solution and also (of course) still uses the wing side intake. I do not know of any other off the shelf RAIs other than those from Nak which use such large bore pipework. All the other RAIs such as Southdown, Mantec, etc, leave the restrictive and leaky OE pipe in situ. So the bottom line, the OE setup without any RAI will be marginally better than the OE setup with an RAI, but the difference will be negligible. The Nakatanenga RAI will massively outperform any setup which leavs the original pipework in place. Since the Nak RAI also provides and extremely effective centrifugal pre-filter, you can with complete safety remove the centrifugal cleaner from the airbox, thus eliminating the second-most restrictive part of the OE system. It is also of course fully sealed. |

thanks everyone,i do like the wing top rai,but its a bit over the top with the cyclone filter,im really liking the nugget coversion as that's really what I'm after to get rid of the crap pipe that land rover fitted , and get better airflow as I have an alive tune and decat with straight centre pipe so that should help with breathing

Is all of this the same for a Td5 with RAI? Mine came fitted when I bought it. Had always wondered if should remove.

The TD5 doesn't have the same problem with a pathetic pipe from wing intake to airbox, as far as i know, but the general comments about RAIs of small diameter restricting the airflow still apply. I am unfamiliar with the TD5 Defender airbox but suspect that it too has a fairly restrictive centrifugal cleaner built it, but although many people just remove these without problems personally I wouldn't unless I had some alternative precleaner.

I have a LHD 2015 Heritage and I'm really not keen on drilling new holes in this car (I want any modifications to be completely reversible). Can you possibly answer 2 questions for me: 1. How is the snorkel fixed to the windscreen frame? 2. Where did the side vent cover come from? 1. Four screws into the windscreen frame.
