Then why the heading of this thread? Quite honestly, I find it offensive. |

I find it offensive when myopic pensioners try to kill me with their vehicles and then refuse to accept that their atrocious driving is a result of their advanced years. We all know there are many bad drivers on the road, of all ages, but I'm stating a fact. There are old and infirm people who should be stopped from driving before they kill someone.
Well done for asking the question Lambert. |

Because the person in question is old? It is not offensive to question someone's ability to drive based on their age. People get older and as they do their ability to function decreases. Are you offended that you are no longer getting out of bed at 4 in the morning to go and do a 15 plus hour shift at work or are you retired and loving it? Don't take offense just for something to do. The tone of some of the posts in this thread seem more appropriate for a Suzuki Jimmy or a Jeep forum. Maybe better to switch over. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Perhaps the atrocious and dangerous driving of some elderly and infirm people is nothing to do with the fact that they're elderly and infirm. Maybe they've been atrocious and dangerous drivers since day one.
This may mean that the younger drivers who are atrocious and dangerous drivers now have always been so and will remain that way for the rest of their lives Lambert, light a bonfire when the old person is out in the car, I'll see the smoke from Bilton and leave the bikes in the garage🙄 |

All I wanted to do was gain some perspective on the issue of age related impairment on driving and what I as a responsible member of society can do to to make my local roads a safer place. I accept that aging affects each individual differently. I am somewhat dissapointed though not totally surprised that the responses vary depending on the age of the respondee but what do I know about being old or able to drive. If anyone has had any direct involvement in the process of assessment of fitness to drive I would still appreciate your feedback. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Well, yes, elderly drivers are dangerous as they have slow reflexes, bad eyes, etc. Young drivers are dangerous, as they have no experience, drive too fast, take risks, etc. Some restrictions must be put in place. My suggestion is that only 54 years old should be allowed to drive. Well, this for the current year of course, next year only 55 years old allowed, the following year 56 years old, and so on. |

Right time someone answered the original question.
I have in my past had to report several persons to the D.V.L.A. and courts because of the standard of there driving. I have never felt guilt or remorse that I have started the process as I believe that a motor vehicle of any description is dangerous in the hands of any person young, old, black ,white ,male or female if the standard of driving is a danger to others. If you have seen this person commit dangerous acts or fails to comply with the road traffic act not once but constantly then how would you feel if that person , the next day does the same act and kills someone and you did nothing knowing what you know, how would you deal with it knowing you could have prevented it. Bring it to the attention of those who can make the decision to with draw the licence knowing you did the right thing and never mind the other persons feeling or that of his /her family. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |
