Thoughts on this SIIa?
This SIIa has come up for sale locally and I'm quite interested.

I have been given a price but keen to hear everyone's thoughts on it. It's running a 19J engine which apparently is in good order (not running on and no smoke) and the underneath looks good.

It is not a IIA. It looks like it is a Series 3 with a IIA front bolted on. The C reg would suggest the the original identity would be a Series II not a Series IIA.
Did you get the chassis number from the plate on the bulkhead. The first four digits will identify the Series it is. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Thanks. I'd noticed the bulkhead was SIII. When the previous owner bought it, it had a SIII front end which has been changed back to SIIa at the same time as the 19J was put in. I've not seen it personally yet as it's in Leeds but I'm in Orkney Shocked . The owner lives here now and is looking to bring it up and sell it. I'll try and get a picture of the chassis number.

It looks more likely to be a Series II with a III dash fitted Confused Darren

Definitely need to get the chassis number before you do anything. I'd also say that dependent upon its age it may not have been a wise move going back to that light configuration either.

Series 2s ran from 58-61 so if the C plate is legit it's a 2a

You might be right. C reg is IIA territory though - 1965 - and without further info it just seems more likely to have been updated with newer bits than back dated.

The headlights moved to the wings in 1969 so if this one is correctly registered as a C reg then the lights are correct as is. Darren

yep correct. I said "dependent on age" and "if the C reg is legit" etc etc as this determines what it should or shouldn't have. Need to know the chassis number and what price is being asked first though.....

I'm thinking it may be a SIII which has "assumed" the identity of a IIA perhaps at a time when the III wasn't eligible for Historic VED rates.

Whatever the reason, I'd be very wary with that one, and establish exactly what it is and why it is like it is before considering it.

Most of it looks like S.IIa rather than S.III. It's probably been 'upgraded'.
There's no heater vent in the wing and the door hinges are S.IIa.
