BFG ATs - no good in the wet - any suggestions?
Hi - I have BFG ATs on my 110 which, although superb off road are now showing themselves to be a bit slippy on the road especially in the wet and when the roads are greasy. I'm thinking of getting another set of boosts with some more road-friendly tyres on but what to get - GG AT2s seem to be pretty popular for allround use but will they have the same problems in the wet as the BFGs? Mrs H uses it a fair bit for ferrying the kids around so need something a bit more usable in all road conditions.

The mrs has gg at2's on her disco 2.

Yes they slide in the wet just like the bfg's!
I have heard of some winter continentals getting a good write up but not the same ones the new defender are wraped with.

Any good road bias tyre will work well in the wet . An All Terrain tyre is just that a Jack of all trades master of none. Me I'm putting AT's on for the Winter 285/75/16's BFG's AT KO's and taking off the KM2's

That said the D3 is on full Winters as is the X5 Embarassed

We run BFG's A/T on our Disco and the 2 110's are on BFG MT.

Have not experienced undue slipping in the wet on the A/T The stopping distance of a M/T is greater then A/T

A couple of points. Tyre pressures???? IF over inflated I could imagine they would give less grip in the wet (Smaller foot print??) Also adjusting driving style?

the new GG AT pattern is out - thing is, you need to think what's your vehicle most used for? if your on/off road bias is 95%/5% then there isnt much point having an AT pattern. Mine spends quite a bit of time offroad, and I have maxxis bighorns which work for me, unless I have a very lond trip across europe to do in which case more road biased tyres go on. there is no "right" answer to this question, it all depends on how you use your vehicle and what what you need it to do

however, i ve never had problems with ATs being slippery in the wet at all, so you might want to have a look at your pressures etc.

Try some Enduro AT's, not many people use these tyres but i do and have do for years, there fairly cheap, get very good mileage out of them (ive done 20k on this set and they have about 3/4 of the tread left), there quiet on the road, work well on wet roads, work very well in snow and ice, very good for hard bottomed green lanes and on wet rocks and get me across muddy fields and tracks that the tractors have been running up and down in the winter.

Overall they are a very good tyre that are suited to the wide range of work that a defender gets used for, in my opinion they are a true 50/50 tyre.

BFG A/T are terrible in the wet and useless on wet greasy grass. I owned a brand new 2000 TD5 Defender and i had to do an emergency stop in wet conditions on the standard 265 BFG A/T's and i thought someone had sabotaged my brakes, it just sailed on. Now run BFG M/T's and in rain or mud they self clean and dig in. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I would certainly second the use of Enduro Runway All terrain. I think you can get them for about £70/corner.

They came on the 90 I bought last January, I have since put about 10k on them with no noticeable drop in tread depth.

They are great on and offroad, can't say I have had any issues at all with them. Did about 50km offroad last week across all sorts of terrain with no issues, mud/sand/gravel.

They are not a mud tyre - but then again I have never used a mud tyre so I don't know what difference they make.

thanks all - maybe I'm just being oversensitive as I've got Vred Wintracs on the Disco which have made a huge difference now the roads are more greasy. I may look at the new GG ATs which may do the trick.

The poor performance of BFG ATs in the wet seems strangely controversial... I know tyres are subjective, but it still surprises me that some (including myself) find them poor, when others don't.
It may just be to do with what people are comparing them to...
But I'm also wondering if it is something to do with ABS versus non ABS?
(I have only had non-ABS Defenders).
Although obviously the ultimate grip would be the same regardless of this device - maybe it's less noticeable in ABS-equipped vehicles?
Just a thought... Confused

I agree. A big heavy vehicle without ABS and big powerful brakes are a recipe for disaster but i was amazed just how quick they let go in the wet. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..
