Hi,
This is my first post and is unfortunately is about a mechanical problem. The problem occurs at high final drive rpm. In high range on the road in 6th gear it sounds like a whirring noise similar to a noisy diff. When stationary with transfer box in neutral and gearbox in 6th... let the clutch up and its a heavy metallic rattle. When in low range it happens at same rpm in 6th so is obviously not road speed related. There is also a slight driveline clunk but not sure if that's related. Truck is a 2009 2.4tdci with 90k on the clock. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris |

I came to the same conclusion... So she's at Devon 4x4 for a new clutch and maybe Ashcroft intermediate mt82 shaft. And some troubleshooting. Brilliant service up there and only half an hour from home. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.

I wish it was, but its not rpm related and not road speed related so has to be between gearbox and transfer box outputs. Even if they just chuck in an Ashcroft recon box I'm not fussed because they arent alot of money.
They are also supplying koni shocks all round but I'll fit them. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon. |

Hi James,
Yeh, does it in all gears but obviously 1st,2nd and 3rd you can hardly hear it but the higher the gearbox output is spinning the noiser the noise. So in high range, about 40mph in 6th you can hear it and in low range 6th it starts getting noisy bout 15mph. Slightly noisier on overrun. Chris 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon. |

if no excessive play in output on t box then intermediate shaft is looking favourite. or t box bearing problem? Cheers

This is my thinking. Hopefully they will get to the bottom of it this week. My masculinity is taking a beating driving the wife's beetle, mind you it does go like stink. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.

Well..... off to pick her up. Apparently I've got ATF in the gearbox now and the old clutch was completely sagged. Not sure this is the noise I could hear but they said it sounds lovely and quiet now.
Fingers crossed 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon. |

They like to put high grade ATF be cause apparently it's better on the syncros and just provides overall better lubrication.
Clutch was ruined, new one feels much better but there is still a transfer box issue somewhere. Very hard to diagnose because it only makes the noise under some circumstances. Just gonna wait until it makes more noise and get a nice refurb box and ashcroft mt82 shaft. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon. |

my understanding was the 85 use of MTF was better than ATF? R380s ran on ATF Cheers

the MTF is a fair bit more than ATF 5000 too. Cheers

Are you 100% sure it isn't the gearstick rattle issue?
It probably unlikely and hope I'm not leading you in the wrong direction but that does do similar to what you are describing. Unless you pinpoint it it can be difficult to tell. Unlikely, but worth mentioning. Just in case. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Regarding the gear stick rattle, next time the noise occurs just put your left hand finger tips to the base of the gearstick cover. If that stops the rattle it's the weights on the bottom of the gearstick. There's a simple remedy posted on this site. My 2008 gearstick rattles at certain revs, I just never bothered sorting it out. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
