It should be hand tight.
Smear a bit of oil on the rubber gasket face then spin on until it stops, tighten with your fingers, once its pretty tight give it another 1/2 a turn. Depending on the angle of the filter you would normally fill it with fresh oil before you fit it. Many thanks
All I need to do now is avoid the gush of draining oil hitting the drive or SWMBO will hit the roof! |

Been there!!
Got a drain pan? Or an old washing up bowl? Lay out an opened out cardboard box underneath it? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. And don't forget it flows better when it's warm, so run the engine for a few minutes before you start The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

Loosen the oil filter a bit, then put a plastic. Bag unerneath / round it, then undo with the bag in place, that way any spilt oil is caught in the bag not the floor

Well I always spill a few drops of oil on the drive when I do an oil change; so the last time I made sure I was well prepared.
#1 Spread a few copies of the Sunday Sport underneath. #2 Nice Warm engine. #3 Old washing up bowl #4 Nice clean rag for wiping around oil plug. #5 Even calculated the distance the oil would come out against position of bowl. Undid the plug; caught all the oil in the bowl; moving it towards the sump as the oil slowed. Then... I started to clean the oil plug when it all went wrong... #1 End of rag in the bowl full of oil #2 wiping caused a wipping of oil on the rag #3 oil in my eye #4 attempting to wipe oil from eye... #5 up turned bowl of oil. Now I lying there under the land rover feeling the warm oil slowly soak into my overalls... Have you ever tried to remove overalls when under the land rover to keep at least all the oil in one place? Nope... its not easy... so I ended up with every single drop spilt... and dripping in oil. Even the page 3 girl was laughing at me Took longer to clean up than do the change. |

Best top tip
Next time you do an oil change and have removed the sump drain plug, discard it and fit a Femco drain plug, makes an oil change so easy, no mess, no spills, best quick mod you will ever do. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52187....drain+plug http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic29173....drain+plug For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

A job I must do very soon. I was looking at a genuine service kit which consisted of oil filter, fuel filter and air filter and a new sump plug for £78, seems a lot or is it about right?
Am I right going for genuine? Great tip with the sump drain tap, but is it more likely to get hit/pulled out off road? To be honest I have never heard of anyone having a mishap with a Femco drain plug while off roading, and they are fitted to thousands of Land Rovers For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

Oil and Fuel filters are fairly reasonable from Land Rover, but their air filter is just shockingly over priced. I've just bought a Mann Air filter for mine from Euro car parts, about £10 with their discount (which is always on). A genuine one was over £30 with my discount! |
