I've just now fitted a pair of LED bulbs from Fourby, mentioned in an old thread elsewhere. Waiting for it to get dark now and I will report back. I fully expect them to be so bright, they will set fire to the hedgerow.

Not legal though I'm afraid, as you are using a fitting deigned and approved for Halogen headlight bulbs.
Unless the 'bulbs' you've fitted are 'E' marked too. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Fourby says (or at least strongly implies) they they are legal and my local MOT man who is a bit of a stickler says he only checks alignment and colour so he is happy. If I do get an MOT fail, I will demand my money back from Fourby.
Anyway, back to the important news, they are lovely and white and bright and I can see where I'm going now. My roof mounted spots cast what now appears to be a dirty brown light compared to these.
On dip there is a bit of a patterning but that's not a problem for me.
Next Saturday I will get them properly aligned by my MOT man and of that goes well, will confirm they will pass next MOT.

It's not an MOT fail that you should be worried about. The MOT is just a safety and roadworthyness test. It is not a construction and use regulations test. Just because it's passed an MOT does not mean it meets the requirements of the regulations.
If you fitted them knowing they may not be compliant with construction and use regs and have an accident involving a fatality, they will go through your vehicle with a fine tooth comb. Watch your insurance company step back from its obligations when it's discovered you have non compliant parts fitted.
You must be sure they are legal to cover your own arse. Ignorance is no defence in the eyes of the law.

This has been beaten to death numerous times on here (a search will yield plenty of threads), but there exist not a single LED light bulb which can be legally used in a standard or cristal headlight which are all type approved for halogen bulbs only. Same applies to xenon bulbs, they are all illegal too. By xenon bulbs I mean a real xenon bulb, not the type approved H4 bulbs filled with xenon gas.
The problem with LED or with a real xenon bulb in a H4 type approved headlamp is a real one. Their emitted light comes from a different point than from a real H4 bulb, and the lamp reflector will throw this light forward in a pattern which will irritate oncomers eyes. Nothing worse than boy racers appraching you with such reworked headlights. Rolling Eyes

Hi all,

Just managed to finish wiring up my LED headlights, well, fit the DRL Controller so the halo works.

Also managed to fit the new WIPAC light adjuster, and adjusted the pattern, both headlights pointing to the ground when in setting 0.

Anyway, a vast improvement over the standard candles.

Worth every penny of the £139 i paid for the lights.

I bought the lowing DRL controller and fitted it on the passenger side engine compartment area. I also hooked up the ACC wire to the blower power wire (ign sw live), using a scotch lock).

DRL Controller used:-

Then I went for a run:-

Took all afternoon to wire up, it wasn't complicated, but i felt that I needed to do it right, i.e. run cables in conduit in discreet areas, fit proper econoseal connectors etc etc. The scotchlock was the only make do connection.

Cheers
Andy

The MOT is a basic safety check and does NOT check the legality of the headlights. Just because the headlights pass the MOT test which checks they work, the colour and the aim does NOT make them road legal

The headlights are obligatory lights and my law have to be type approved which means E marked these days. The standard Defender headlights are made by Wipac and were approved with filament bulbs in. They have NOT been tested and approved with a replacement LED cluster in.

Think of it this way, you design, prototype, test, get approval for and manufacture your item. Would you allow someone do a modification that YOU have not seen, tested or approved to be given the OK under your approval which has costed you money?

Now that is my view what is the view of a well know recognised light/LED manufacturer.

Why are exterior applications allowed off-road only?
Up to now it is for exterior applications not legal to replace conventional light bulbs with LEDs. The only exceptions are ex-factory equipment with LEDs by the manufacturer or a replacement of the complete lamp-unit, which means substantial effort.
The products do not have an ECE certification which is necessary for exterior applications. Products without ECE certification which are used for exterior applications of a car lead to an expiration of the operating license and the insurance coverage.

That is taken from Automotive Lighting FAQ on Osram website here

Hi,

They are doing fine. Mind you I'm not really challenging them at present. I also bought a 22" light bar for the soft a bar.

The combination is excellent Wink

If I was being truly critical, I'd say the spread of light directly to the sides is not not as good as I'd have hoped (the Headlights only). But with my led combo it's irrelevant.

Cheers
