United Kingdom 2016 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Scotia Grey
Last 90 took a pro body shop 3 or 4 attempts to spray the roof and then a new one was fitted to get it right!

However you do it, consider removing the roof to do it, might sound obvious but it's easier to do off the car Mike

Damn, (!) closer inspection just found this little bit of (likely?) corrosion:

What can I expect to have to do to fix that pre paint?

It's about an inch in the long dimension, as you can also just see the gutter area paint has chipped away to reveal white around the rack used to sit..

I figure first remove headlining to see if it's popped through? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Highly unlikely thats got near through. It will be surface damage - repairable - its the fact its the largest panel that adds the challenge and gets you to a full respray (or in my experience) smart repairs didnt do it Mike

Looks like typical surface corrosion. Can be rubbed down, rust proofed with your treatment of choice, filled, then primed and finished. Before starting I would check for corrosion under the gutters all round as well. My previous defender showed corrosion under the gutters. This required the roof off to properly treat.
Full inspection now will decide your best course of action.
