there are only shims for the front to set the CV against the brearing/bush inside the stub axle so when you turn the steering wheel the CV shaft does not move horizontally its just turns and rotates.
there are not meant to be any shims on the rear, the rear shaft can move horizontally the length of the splines difference between diff and DM ends. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Thank-you James. Perfect timing too.
Glad thatโs not an issue then. ๐๐ป No Guts, No Glory.

No shims at the rear. The only reason for shims at the front is to keep the CV joints in the right place with respect to the axis of the swivel pins.
Incidentally your photo Steve is a good illustration of the shortcoming of hex head bolts on the flanges, since the corner of the head that is uppermost in the photo is perfectly aligned to damage a wheel that is a close fit on the centre of the hub. |

That's good to have the extra clarification. Many of you guys here are more experienced than me with these things.
I see the issue you mention with those bolts, and that was immediately after I took the wheel off so how it was tightened at the factory. I had not undone them at that point. I have the NSR passenger rear done, just the other side side to go but have it on stands and the bolts out. Currently dodging the odd rain shower! The old flanges and shaft splines were definitely very worn and past it. I would say another 3k and they'd fail, much worse than the rear. I've personally opted to grease them on the rear myself rather than removing the seals, I'd rather grease than have oil leak issues possibly. The trouble is now I'm more aware of the intricacies of the drivetrain there is more to worry about that something may fail. Better get on with it. In fact on reflection aren't there new seals with the rear shafts as Ashcroft ones are slightly different sizes. Cheers

There weren't seals supplied when I fitted my Ashcroft rear shafts (since replaced with one-piece).

None came with mine either. That I am positive of as I only opened the boxes an hour ago.
The flanges come with paper gaskets and circlips, the halfshafts at least for the rear were just the pair on their own. They are exceptionally well packaged too! Mine are in now, all good no problems at all. There was a lot of metal wear on the rear, you could pick it up with a magnet the dust which I cleaned out which will be the 'fretting'. I'm pretty sure water got in under the caps as well to do this, as it definteky looked that way to me so the new flanges will be a lot better in that respect. Popped out tonight, all good and everything much much smoother and tighter in the drivetrain as back to normal really.
Really pleased, and the quality of the Ashcroft Transmissions parts is A1 as is the service too. Highly recommend them and thank-you to those of you who kindly offered invaluable advice. No Guts, No Glory.
