Having had vehicles with both the MT82 and the R380 the MT82 definitely changes more consistently and once run in mine changed very sweetly. The shaft failing is the adapter shaft between the gearbox and transfer box. If properly lubricated on installation then it shouldn't give trouble

In fact my Td5 with disco V8 5th and puma transfer box revs lower in top than my puma did 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I can remember Ashcrofts doing a thing about it and they concluded it would not work very well in a Tdi, the ratios are all very set to the Puma engine and the Tdi would struggle a bit as its much lower revving.
If it was me I would spend your money on a Rocky Mountain Overdrive instead which would give you basicaly a 6th gear but at much less cost and hassle plus all your existing gears are left in place. I have been driving a Puma for a couple of weeks now and find the gearbox is a bit Signal Boxy compared to my Lt77. The R380 I had in Miss Shaggydogs Td5 was definitely better then both. Owning both, I have no hesitation at all in saying that I think the MT82 is incomparably better in every respect to the R380. The latter is in my view one of the most second-rate gearboxes of recent times and a huge disappointment.
That being said the installation of the MT82 in the Defender leaves a lot to be desired, in fact every engineering aspect of the fitment of the Ford engine and 'box is very shoddily done. The MT82 as used in the Defender is unlikely to be remotely suitable for use with other Defender engines due to the ratios it contains. It may be that other versions of the 'box are better suited, it is after all used in a range of vehicles most of which probably don't have the world's lowest first gear. |

Not driven the R380 box for a very long time so can't compare, but the MT82 box is my least favourite thing about the Puma. I feel you have to be very gentle with it, changing gear slowly and even letting it neutral between a 1st and 2nd to change smoothly. If you treat it nicely it does pull well and cruises effortlessly at 70+ James

I like the MT82.
The adapter shafts should have been lubed from the factory, some weren't. Mine was okay, but still waswirth checking once in. My only criticism is 1st gear is ever so slightly too low. If you need really low gearing low range does that. When pulling away into traffic quickly you have a very rapid change up required. Hello, new to here and already looking for advice ! I've a 110 (10 plate) and it has stuck in i think first gear, but the gear lever is in neutral. I've been trying to follow similar threads on here but my question is, are the two indented plugs almost hidden by the gear lever mount bracket? can anyone show me a pic of them? if so can i unbolt the gear lever and get better access to the vertical plug? and is it ok to drill into it and lever it out?. then whats next? Any advice would be very much appreciated, thank you kindly

Never had a problem with my MT82. I treat it with care.

My feelings are much the same. The change isn't as good as it was on my old 200tdi with the LT177 box. However I gradually got used to it and now I don't see it as a serious issue. I'm currently half way through a 9 week lay off from driving due to a hip replacement, so it will be interesting to see how long it takes me to get the changes going sweetly again when I re-start. As others have said first is very low, so you soon need to change up to second once you move away. However the low ratio could be useful if you are towing a heavy load. John |
