injector learning..
Hi. I have a lot of previous posts about trouble with my engine…they are ongoing.. The story - my injectors was changed at 45.000 km - about 3 years ago - authorized dealer did it - without calibrating/programming them - was told they had software problems but it didn´t matter - not needed.
At 135.000 the engine died due to a hole burned in piston in cyl. 1.
Know I have changed the engine - had an independent garage to calibrate pump etc.without problems - But the computer turns up with fault after typing the 16 digit code for each injector - tried several times - even changed all 4 injectors - did no difference….
Connrctions have been inspected and cleaned - and all codes inspected and checked again and again.
Anyone experienced that? Running the car is ok - sort of - no noise when cold, but when warm a consistent knocking starts - without a doubt injector related.
Is there any way to check the wiring or even the computer in the car?

What diagnostic tool are they using to do the injector learn? There was an issue with one tool manufacturer that had to do an update to allow the process to complete on the Puma, same symptoms. Thumbs Up

Just got a call from the mechanic. They have updated the ECU and calibrated injectors Very Happy - but without doing the injector coding - the 16 digit stuff…as it just won´t work…
They also managed to do the pilot learning etc. and been driving it for while without any injector noise.
Could I be so lucky that the coding isn´t needed for the engine to work properly - as everything else is in place.
Unfortunately I have to wait until monday to pick it up - fingers crossed all weekend…

Entering manually the 16 digit injectors code is a workaround to the function "injectors learning" but the purpose is the same.

The first is the manual way to "tell" to the ECU some infos(the 16 digit code is the fuelling mass flow calibration plus more infos), the second is an automatic (and better in my opinion because it is also related to the single cylinder health state/compression value) calibration. The value is deducted by rpm irregularity and the current required to open the injectors (plus other actions).

FOMOCO (Ford Motor Company) ECU is one of the most advanced (more than Siemens and bosch), similar to Denso System Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Thank you - great info - as I read it the entering of the code is not needed when performing the automatic calibration. I know that they did take the car for a ride before calibrating - it worked Thumbs Up

I think you can buy a kit at Ebay that allows you to use a laptop to do it.

Regarding calibration of my own defender - I sure think they succeeded Thumbs Up Just picked it up and drove 50 km - no injector noise - at least not anything like before and the engine runs smooth. I am happy and think I will forget all about the new Mercedes Sprinter 4*4 Wink

Many (but not all) of the readily available diagnostic tools will do it. For example, BBS Faultmate will, but Nanocom (as far as I know) won't. It seems to be at the moment the biggest drop-off with the Nanocom, and hopefully a feature which will be added soon.

I've just had the injector and pump learn done on my 2010 110 with 125K on the clock. Short story as to why it was necessary......engine has always had this horrible rattle sound at times but recently started jerking when cold as soon as I lifted the right foot.
Had a chat with an independent LR bloke here in WA (Rovertech at Bentley) and they said to remove BAS Remap and they do a full Autologic scan and update.
This they did but then I couldn't reinstall the remap! Censored .
Got onto Pete at BAS and he advised I send him the new map and he'd recalibrate my remap. What an absolutely great service.
All done in very quick time by Pete and back to the workshop I went and the above "learn" done and the vehicle is really running so much quieter.
Only drawback is I can now hear the Cook having a go at me....... Laughing
Good luck with your prob, I just had to post my experience here as previously when the stealer said they'd done the learning and updates they actually did nothing.

Hi guys,

quick question regarding injector learning:

My truck went for some mods recently and they left the battery unplugged for around 3-4 days while they were working on it and when I got it back it felt a bit sluggish.

I've taken it back to the original factory map and back to the BAS v2 map, but it still does not feel as nippy as before.

Is it possible that the ECU 'lost' the map? or does it need injector learning?
