Hi, I'm looking at servicing my TD5 in a few weeks and I'm putting together all the parts I need. With regards to the engine oil, whats the "best" one for my Truck. Its done about 50k.
I've looked at the site sponsor (Advanced Factors) and they would supply Mobil 5x30 oil. This would be the first service for the TD5 since I have owned it. Although the service details are up to date (Private garage, Ex Water works truck) would it be worth while changing ALL the fluids while I'm at it; Power steering, Front diff, gearbox, Rad etc? I'm not looking at wasting money so if there is no good reason then I won't. I'm thinking if I did I'm then on a level playing field so to speak. I used a PD (pump deuce ... not sure on spelling) specific oil.
Whilst not a written requirement, the logic in my head made sense. The TD5 unit injectors are essentially the same theory as the VAG PD's. Made sense to run that. I'm a bit of an avid Mannol oil fan to boot, so that's where it came from (unless I couldn't get hold of it, then I ran Com-Line PD). |

When I first did mine I changed all filters and oil, coolant, axle oil, gearbox oil and differential oil. Also, put a new ancillary belt on it.
Used genuine filters and recommended oils |

Thanks for all the input. Looks like I'll change all the fluids this time round then. The choice of engine oil, any input there? Which is the best fully syn oil? Mike

Initially used Castrol magnatec 5w-30 fully synth (a5), but now use shell helux af 5w-30 fully synth.
Both are good! |

As others have said, I'd change the majority if not all of the fluids and consumables.
None of the work is particularly challenging, and none of it is prohibitevely expensive. You'd be starting from a known baseline/benchmark then. The information available on this forum (just search individual servicing tasks) will make the job ten times easier. I have learned a lot from my fellow members and saved heaps of time and energy (thank you). Check out Opie Oils, another site sponsor - they'll give you top notch advice and a forum discount to boot. Personally, I'd stick with genuine filters and consumables |

Don't forget 2 oil filters on a Td5 and be careful with the 2 bolts on the rotary filter ..... I'd also change out the injector wiring harness too

Another question, I've gone and got all the oils I need for the truck, I've opted for Comma as they are easily available.
One doubt I have however is what their system recommended for the Transfer box. Land Rover say 75W90 but the motor factor said 80W90. http://www.commaoil.com/passenger-vehicles/products/view/183 This is what I went for but i've not put it in yet, just in case! http://www.commaoil.com/productsguide/view/6/182/SX5L Is this what I should have gone for? It's a semi synthetic not a mineral. http://www.commaoil.com/passenger-vehicles...81/SXGL45L Perhaps the motor factors were right with the first one buts its a 80W90 Any advice very welcome.... Recommend you keep mineral fluids in transfer case. Sythetics can cause it to leak where it did not before. Go with Land Rover recommended viscosities. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

On Engine oil for the TD5, I use quantum Platinum 5w/40 in my PD130 engined Ibiza, do people think that would be suitable for the TD5 as well? Saves me keeping 2 oils in stock.
My Def handbook says 5w/30, 5w/40 to meet ACEA A1/B1. Or I go the other way. Looks like Mannol PD oil meets VW 505 01, so would work in the ibiza. £56 for 20L too. |
