Wanted... 28 BHP!
Well, in the hunt to find possibly a missing 23 galloping horses, from the elusive 122 to 150 BHP ECU query, I am keen to Rolling Road my Defender!

I Found a very well set up place yesterday with a $500k rolling road (normally used to tune high performance Oz V8's!) and I asked the guy if it was possible to RR the Defender. He asked all sorts of questions about permanent 4WD, TC, ABS etc etc, all of which I had not though about really, having previously only strapped RWD cars to the rollers!

So, how do I go about setting up the Defender to do this please? Question

Cheers, Pete Smile YOLO... You Only Live Once...

The father in laws company has a dyno that bolts to all four hubs so it would work easily on that...... But it's a long way to come back over to Wakefield Rolling with laughter

Maybe look for somewhere with this setup instead of a rolling road? Ray

Well I could send you over my ECU to plug in and play on yours...

... but then again, I may not get it back if those 28 horses are found! Laughing YOLO... You Only Live Once...

I would have thought one or more of the well known tuners might have had some idea as to whether any/some/all of the newer models have left the factory with a "secret" upgrade to 150BHP?

Yep - drop the front prop (completely) and run with the centre diff locked. You can take the prop off at home and drive to the RR in diff' lock to make life easier Thumbs Up

Pete, you shouldn't have any worries at all with this,..there are plenty of dynos set up for 4WD,..there's plenty of 4WD stuff,..lots of cars etc,..Audis etc,..you just need one set up for 4WD, & Lol,.....hope the Defender has enough grunt to move the rollers?!!!
VERY interested to know how you go.....maybe you need to post on Aulro, to get a dyno close to you?
Martin.

Unless you bought a special edition defender 90, your defender is not 150bhp. Unless someone else has had a play obviously.

The 150bhp sheet is just an extension, just as the instructions for fitting the soft top don't apply to hard tops etc Cheers, David
Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8.

Indeed, old news!

However the comment on this thread has sparked my interest in doing some more research Thumbs Up

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic43701-60.html

..... I love this thread now,,, been at solihull today but cant believe just how yesterdays news the defender has become,, no one cares nor comments on such options or calamities now, they just say whats the big deal, they dont even make em anymore but if you love conspiracies you'll love this,, i cant relay too many details for fear of being struck off as a priority customer but it would appear that there has been a considerably large number of 90 defender escapees accidentally being tuned with 150hp!!! Now its quite a big Talking point in certain closed door arias but apparently a computer that was set to read the barcodes on the special edition 90s and write the higher hp tunes onto their ecus wasn't quite set correctly and so when reading the barcode and recognising it was a 90 it just wrote in the 150hp tune without discrimination to if it was a special or not!!! yeah, I followed that thread Pete, as i guess you did,...and i thought it was "myth & hearsay".....still do.
before you go disconnecting prop shafts etc, I'd talk to someone who does 4WD dyno tuning & see what they say,....surely although they're in the U.K., Pete at BAS would tell you how he does it, or Alive, etc.
Looking forward to your results!
Martin.

Can the ECU be "read" to determine the BHP without the need for a rolling road?

No.

The ECU simply monitors lots of things, like air temp, water temp, throttle position etc etc and then 'tells' the engine to do stuff based upon those things... like how much fuel pressure, turbo boost pressure etc etc.

If the same ECU was used on one Defender on a rolling road power run, then taken off and put on another identical Defender, both vehicles would not produce exactly the same power... as other physical variables such as fuel type, engine age, manufacturing tolerances would also affect the result.

More power from ECU changes on a diesel usually come from altering the fuelling and turbo boost 'maps'... but that takes a lot of programming and operating skill and hours of dyno testing, rolling road testing and road testing to get it right!

Just like BAS and ALIVE tuning have done Thumbs Up YOLO... You Only Live Once...
