The last time I had a 'trumpet' noise it was the result of a hole in the pipe from turbo to intercooler where the pipe had been rubbing on the steering box due to sloppy assembly.

That's no good, could be a leak in one of the turbo hoses like Blackwolf said.
Cheers, Tim PS Have a look at this thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic1707.h...ntercooler |

Mine has just been back to dealer under warranty sounded like a bag of hammers between 2600 & 2800rpm, this developed at 7300miles on the clock. Suspected it was a resonating sound, not a pure engine noise.
They did the following: Loaded software update to EM Repositioned and secured Exh manifold turbo heat shield & crankshaft sensor heat shield. Also carried out oil change at my request (130 had done a lot of mountain miles in the alps during summer) So far it has been a lot quieter. Technician suspected it may be a resonating sound from the fuel system. I still have not recovered from the cost of the engine oil but plenty of advice on forum suggests changing at 6K miles not 12K as LR advise. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

My bolt was missing completely, and on 3 others that have come through our workshop.
Perhaps a money saving ploy. But no trumpet noise. |

That heat shield bolt was missing from mine, as well. When investigating my 'trumpet' sound, I found:-
1) the missing heatshield bolt; refitting made no difference, 2) loose exhaust manifold bolts (front end of manifold) and damaged gasket; new gasket and correct torque made no difference, 3) (finally) small hole in pipe from turbo to intercooler - eureka! problem solved. |

Tim, finally got round to sorting this last weekend, you were right it was the heat shield but the bolt the opposite end was loose. It was driving me mad and now sorted. A few more weeks and it would have worked itself out completely. Cheers Pal Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |
