If I am right in thinking that that is the joint between the gearbox extension housing and the transfer box, a common cause of that damage is a hard frontal impact pushing the front axle backwards until the front propshaft extensible section is full compressed, whereupon it pushes the transfer box backwards. The fact that the force is applied to the transfer box alont the axis of the output shaft tends to twist the transfer box and break the offside gearbox extension housing before the nearside.

Done hard enough it is possible to get the transfer box to seperate completely from the gearbox.

I imagine however that if you have had a frontal impact of sufficient severity to do that you would have noticed the other damage!

Might need to consider bent gearbox mainshaft as well.....

Do you have standard front suspension and propshaft? 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP
