Drivers Side is so dry I'd be worried that there's not grease in it!!!

For the sake of a mornings work and a few quid I would strip both sides down, new seals and a new one shot of grease in each. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

As miker said
It seems too dry the other side. They all weep slightly.Think you should sort it sooner than later |

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Most have a swivel that seeps a little bit. If it bothers you, clean it up and do it again next year.

Mine are the same but the other way round, drivers side is damp, passenger side dry as..
I think as long as it's not pouring out just leave well alone. A quick wipe at MOT time |

So a range of opinions thanks to all for the advice.
Regarding the dry side - as I understand it the grease in the swivels on an '03 TD5 can't be topped up, but will require stripping cleaning out the old and topping up with the correct amount of new grease... If a complete strip and rebuild is needed, then given the time involved maybe it's better to leave it until the swivel itself or something else in that region (bearings? brake discs?) needs replacing and do it all in a oner? Seems like more than a mornings work (for a first time attempt), although happy to be convinced otherwise! |

The tracta seals are easy to do;
Wheel off Disconect steering arm Remove brake calliper and hang out of way (removing top bracket from hub) Remove bolts holding hub assy to axle casing Slide it off including drive shaft Flip on front Remove retaining bolts on plate Remove seal Repeat process backwards to reinstall (new calliper bolts to be fitted) 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |
