MY15 Defender -18,000 Km - Crank shaft rear oil seal leak?
Had a look under my Defender last night before I bring it in for its first service and noted quite a bit of oil between the rear of the engine- gearbox interface - from the photo should I be worried this maybe the beginnings of a crank rear oil seal going as I had similar on my old 200tdi range rover and it was engine out for a fix.
Anyone else had issues with this on the 2.2 Puma at low mileage?

Yes, I had 2 leaks very early on with our 2014 2.2

It had a new timing cover first, then a rear main seal at about 15000 km 2001 90 HT 6.0LS/6spdAuto.
2003 90 td5 soft top.
2014 90 XS SW 2.2.

I noticed a crankshaft rear main seal leak on my 2013 2.2 at 13,000 km and had it replaced at the 20,000 km service. Just a gearbox out. No need to remove the engine. I had a Mazda BT 50 with the 3.2 engine and it had also developed a rear main seal leak at similar km before I swapped to the Defender. No further leak once repaired luckily.

What happened to the timing cover that it required a replacement so soon?

Just had out 2014 2.2 in for its second service, the dealer noticed the rear crank seal was leaking when they changed the clutch. 20K miles on it

Mine has done 17K and I noticed this whilst greasing the UJ's the other week. So it's booked into have it dealt with. And while they are in there I'm getting the backlash clunk-clonk (suspected output shaft) looked into as it'll be rude not too whilst they are in there.

Hi

For what it is worth I had the exact same problem on mine on its first service at 8500 miles. Returned to main dealer and had it replaced under warranty.

Same on my November 30 2013 Defender. Replaced at first service, around 4,000 miles if memory serves! Any farther South and I'll need to trade the Defender in for a Landing Craft Smile

Looks like my crank shaft rear oil seal is going again at 25,000km, having had it done last year under warranty at c18,000km. Water Ingress also an issue again coming in around the passenger side of the dashboard and rusting all over the left side fuse bar ledge.

Mine was weeping and was replaced under extended warranty... this has failed again and the trucks back in having another one fitted less than 1500 miles later....Hopefully this one will last a bit longer!!

Had 2013, 2014 and 2015 Defender 90's, each had crank shaft rear oil seal replaced. All leaked at exactly 3,500km. 2013 Defender replaced twice. Informed by dealer that it was a very rare problem. Cheers mmm

How unlucky can that be mate... Big Cry

Sounds odd that 2 should fail on your MY13... would that not be indicative of something else, perhaps excessive crankshaft float putting more load on the seal? Question YOLO... You Only Live Once...

I had a problem at 30k kms with my MY 13 - 130 the hand brake drum was full of oil and of course the hand brake did not work. Thought it might be a blown out put seal which was correct, when the LR techs stripped the handbrake they found a bend in the out put shaft which cause the seal to fail, I was told the bent shaft could only have happened during the original build. Fixed under warranty just a well.
