Hi, I thought that I would share my latest Land Rover antics!
We are about to take our Land Rover on a trip to Spain and Portugal and I have been working through a list of preparation jobs. We are taking a roof tent and I have built a full length aluminium roof rack to carry it along with a cantilevered extension to carry 4 bikes! When mounting the roof rack I noticed that the front section of the roof gutter on the drivers side, where it meet the A-pillar was quite mobile, such that when you pushed / pulled the corner of the roof rack you could feel / see the gutter moving. I wasn't too happy with this as I was concerned that over time the metal might fatigue if subjected to cyclic loading. I then set about removing the front section of headlining, which is possible without having to remove the centre section. I made a tool for getting behind the plastic fixing studs which allowed them to be pulled out without damage. After a bit of fiddling around the headlining was out and I was able to access the fixings which hold the front of the roof to the window frame. Low and behold the large self tapping screw at the edge of the A-pillar had backed out on the drivers side. I refitted it with a spring washer behind the head and tightened it up - I did the same to the one on the passenger side. Doing this had really firmed up the roof gutter in this region. Refitting the headlining was fairly straight forward. Hopefully this might be of some help to someone else. |

That screw is the biggest LR bodge I have ever known.
It's like a wood screw from the 1700's! Should hold now though if you have added a spring washer Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |
