Air box mod definitely allows engine too spool up quicker, obviously enables by being a less restrictive too flow . Again you can feel it, however I'm not claiming anything regards torque/ horsepower!

wasn't sure about replying on this thread after the degeneration of the comments. BUT
griffin system fitted and i am impressed. had been decated + no centre box. then no centre box + cat. now full griffin system fitted. revs so easy it had been a couple of weeks since i had driven the 110 and i cant remember it being that responsive. is mapped +big cooler ect. but a good exhaust just lets it rev. if you haven't tried a decat then you don't know what your missing. yes i know it isn't legal but who lives life 100% legal. (now think first) anyway lifes to short to live by rules. ( and yes i do know having nearly killed myself at 17 on a motorbike) every day is for living. 110 xs s/wagon s3 swb soft top |

I used too work for a company that burned up too three million litres of diesel per day with mobile equipment! Not one catalytic converter in sight. Cargo ships burning bunker oil off your coast waiting to enter port, no cat! Would I be correct in believing that in the EU engines over 650bhp don't require a cat? We were encouraged through tax and climate change( (climate scam) too embrace the benefits of the Diesel engine. With the combination of mods too my 2.4 it is now much more economical, up too 2litres per 100kms. That's got too be better for the environment and sustainability!
I see lower running temperature and I am sure that the engine will last longer, inview of the fact it is nolonger ingesting abrasive carbon particles. My vehicle is not operated in a city or suburban environment! |

Pannawonica, is your fuel efficiency improvement a result of all the mods combined?
Mine is remapped with EGR disabled and big intercooler so far. |

Yes, the mods were progressively introduced! It got progressively better! it encouraged me too continue. The only other place too go is the hybrid turbo, however I received advice from someone who has done it that it only adds power at higher rpms. 175bhp/ 480nm @ is enough, wouldn't want too break anything! that being said my end game was looking for efficiency and heat mitigation, objectives which have been achieved! With the help of an 82deg thermostat and insulation However I am still very much willing too learn from those who know more of proven mods in these areas.

Do what you want. its your car
if you are going to put 10 inch exhaust on yours, I wont disagree so many things we do to the defender is not worth the money anyway. many of us running 35" MT in the city with water tank and hi-lift jack all that. we drive to the supermarket as if its in the middle of nowhere. so do what makes you happy. if noise is what you after, by all means go for it my advice is to the OP is perhaps not to use the word "worth" but maybe "is the Decat beneficial? and how big the improvement" cheers Martin |

Another benefit I can see from a decat is freeing up some realestate in the engine bay. Defenders, especially puma's, seem to suffer from an engine bay airflow restriction at highway speeds.
These photos I took illustrate the problem. There's just no where for the required air volume to go. This is really only a problem in higher ambient temps though. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

I always wonder what could be done regarding air from the engine bay! On my MGR V8 the headers exit through the inner wings through big holes each side! Wether there's much of a power increase from decatting I wouldn't debate, however there's better heat flow from the engine. I doubt you will suffer from warped turbo flanges, not too forget less stress on the cooling system. Remember 40% more power equals 40% more potential heat output!

Catalytic converters are really only to do with population health in built up areas anyway, nothing to do with climate change, just like DPF's and EGR.
Not too relevant in most parts for us Pannawonica. |
