There is no washer I don't think. I used PTFE tape on the threads to ensure a good seal.

No mention of a washer here...

I just use a drop or two of gasket sealant on them and the drain plug. They never leak so I'm happy with that.

Many thanks. PTFE has stopped the drain plug leaking. Just have to find out where the other leak is coming from!

Maybe replace it with a Diff Lock Drain?

I've just had the oil changed and they used a copper washer.
I can now say that you still have to tighten the plug correctly to stop it from leaking ![]() I tightned it to 35Nm for now (no leak so far), but the LR workshop manual says 50Nm. Would that be ok or too much for the washer? ![]() Click image to enlarge |

What are you all using for the threads with these plugs?
Options I’m considering are; Hylomar blue universal, yellow, PTFE tape, loctite 222. Probably not the 222 as that’s a light duty thread lock, not so much of a sealer. (Doubt it would play well with oils either, but good for general jobs). Hylomar blue / yellow is very much the same thing almost. Then there is PTFE tape. I’m 50/50 between Hylomar blue and PTFE tape, probably leaning towards the latter. I see BlueST already posted regards PTFE tape. Anyone have any thoughts ? TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I don't know what my workshop used other than the copper washer. On my motorcyles a washer alone was always sufficient
![]() Regarding the torque it seems 50Nm as stated in the LR workshop manual is wrong and it's actually 35Nm - same as the filler plug. That information is from an experienced mechanic I trust and Getrag's MT82 manual. What's your experience? |

I think for the size 35NM seems about right for both fill and drain, I think 50 is too much for the drain, which is up nearer the diff plug torque which is 60NM, those plugs are much much larger in the diffs.
(Transfer box 30NM for both filler and drain). There are some errors in the WSM for sure. It’s strange that for a 2.4 puma the MT82 is stated as taking 2.4L Qty. The 2.2 Puma takes 2.2L. Despite the fact that both are the same transmission. I believe the 2.4L figure is stated as dry fill and 2.2L service fill, however, the above is stated in the WSM. Regards threads I tend to just go with the Hylomar that’s already on diff plugs, if they ever weep or any issues switch over to PTFE tape, both work without any problem at all TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
