110 Double Cab V Estate
I am looking for as many views as possible on the difference in driving
experience between a double cab and an estate. Does the reduced weight in
construction on the back make any difference to the ride quality. Is there more bounce?

Am I correct that there is less space in the back of a DC and the seat back is more upright.

Thanks

C.

They serve fundamentally different purposes so the distinction is quite a contrast.

The drive of the two in my experience is indistinguishable.....neither of them bounce. 90's have bounce, 110's / 130's don't.

The bigger debate is your use in my opinion, having a separate tub allows for the transport of any crap you like whereas the SW gives you many more options for carting bodies around. The SW is probably (but debatably) better for touring / overlanding unless of course you want to start adding bespoke kitchens etc which the DC lends itself nicely.

Mine has HD rears springs with all four lifted and is sitting on Mickey Thompson boots - it rides perfectly IMO, low noise and a well damped and controlled ride.

These things have the aerodynamics and general dynamics of a house, any discernable difference in chassis dynamics between the two is going to be negligible - by the chassis and body that suits your needs.

As per TC, ride difference is non existant.

DC is great for carrying dirty, smelly things. Estate / SW models more cargo space and more versatile in what you can carry.

110 DC has smallest load space of any Defender. Richard

Either a 90, 110 or 130.

The "7 seat" configuration in a 110 SW takes up alot of load space, even when folded away. However the forward facing seats are excellent and comfortable, but take a couple of hours to remove if necessary.

What about a Utility?...... you keep a spacious second row (Can tilt the sets back further) and you still have a 'dirty' area in the back (Which is secure).

I agree with Glyn on this one. I love my DC like I do my left leg but I do hanker after a utility SW. Best of both worlds...

If you don't need 7 seats a USW is the way to go.....then when you are just about to part with the cash, veer off and by a DC!

I would prefer a estate as I already have an svx - not the most practical ! even with 2 back seats.
but the tax and price difference in Ireland between the 2 is huge, there is € 22000.00 difference
between a double cab county with abs,air con, cold climate and the same spec estate not to
mention car tax of € 240 as opposed to € 2200 a year. DC is vat claimable.

the powers that be have not made a ruling on the USW yet.

so it is all down to the ride quality

Is it possible to buy a 110 Utility with the two fold up seats in the rear, or do LR only supply them to the Station Waggons? Can the two seats be fitted to a utility if required?

Not sure of the tub design in the Utility but I imagine it would be possible to fit the forward facing seats from Exmoor trim even if you can't get the original ones Andy

CR the most cost effective Defender to buy in Ireland, with rear seats is the 130. A big old bus but qualifies for the low VRT rate and vat refundable.

Be carefull of buying a new 110 double cab... as its a grey area and I don't think they qualify for the low VRT rate anymore - some thing along the lines of the length of the load bed in relation to the wheelbase length etc.

If I was you I would look for low mileage 110 stationwagon.- pre July 2008 (Still on the lower road tax .) There is a nice xs 2008 model in cork on carzone at the moment.

Regards

N.

The vrt rules are changing for 2011 according to Land Rover Ireland and the 110 DC will qualify
as a cat b commercial at 13.5% vrt, they are going to supply them with the canopy on the back which
gets the load capacity up to what it needs to be .You are correct at present they do not comply.
