The only 4x4 on the field this year is a Nissan sadly
So as I said, harvest got off to a bad start last week when the engine had a bit of a moment, so we've hired in another harvester to get us through. Did two loads with it over the weekend and the clutches that drive two parts of the header packed up so some blokes had to come and fix it. Click image to enlarge The Krone where it died and is having its engine replaced, with the Claas starting this morning. Click image to enlarge Two blokes look at the header. Click image to enlarge Back at our smallest clamp which we fill first to get it cooking whilst we finish off using the last of last year's. That clamp will be filled in a month's time at the end of harvest, and when we've used the little clamp it will be filled with grass next year. The slope on that is a lot steeper than it looks! Click image to enlarge How we open up a field, although I've no idea why he wasn't driving on the track as that would have been a lot easier. I did drive along the track but then had to fall in behind the harvester again when the track ended for the next side of the field. You get little bits of maize all over the place because it blows around like confetti particularly when you have to shoot it over the whole harvester and tractor. |

Great pics Cupboard.
Be careful with those Navaras in the fields, they are rubbish off road or at least were. How has the Maize done this year, I'd have thought quite well if a bit dry? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I'm well aware of the awfulness of many aspects of the Navara! I really don't understand why anyone buys one. They're not cheap, they're huge, their chassis snap, not a good driveline, heavy so they're lower speed limits... I think new ones are better though. But even a Navara with silly tyres would have no issues with that field, it's firm and flat and my boss has been driving his 2wd Tesla round too.
As for the yields, so far it feels good but probably not as fantastic as 2014. The two really hot days we had last week brought it on hugely, the fields we were on yesterday could have been done a week ago but that went a little bit wrong! |

Down this way I have seen the Maize touched just yet, but looks imminent.
Can't beat the smell of clamped maize in the winter, always remember that scent. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

So... harvest is currently going quite badly! After our forager broke, the air suspension on my tractor's seat broke (it really makes you appreciate having a suspended seat when you don't have it any more) and today a wheel has fallen off a tractor and it's ended up in a hedge. It's not long before the wheel was put on and done up to the proper torque, but everyone is OK and it's something we're going to have to keep a closer eye on in future. Still, not very helpful.
Anyway, some more pictures. We had a new Case 742 telehandler on demo today. It wasn't very good. Lots of things were weird bodges, like to get the controls to the hydraulics on the boom they'd just stuck one of those retractable cable reels on the side. It had loads of ground clearance on the driver's side to the point where the step was higher than would have been ideal yet on the other side the bonnet-thing was almost scraping on the ground. The gearbox was a 6f3r powershift with electronic control that was bizarre and didn't work very well. Every time you changed direction it would change up to third which was useless for pushing a load up the clamp. Eventually we managed to work out how to lock it in second, but then you put it in forward, it would drive for a second, stop for a second, then drive again. Reverse and you'd have the same weird pause after setting off. Click image to enlarge In order to get more in we've extended it by 50% with bales. It won't be as compacted but it's the least bad solution. Click image to enlarge So our main clamp guy went back to using our old JCB with the buckrake and I moved from the tractor with the dodgy seat on to the Case. Click image to enlarge Cab was nice and the air con was excellent but the visibility out was rubbish. It felt huge but it wasn't - you really needed the reversing camera but it was positioned in a way that will be knocked of very quickly. And the jerking as you changed direction... still, on balance it's better than the Manipoo. JCB demo tomorrow Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

After barley, then rapeseed in the last two weeks, now milling wheat being cut right next to us yesterday. Nice private farmer combine at the front on Caterpillar tracks. Oh so slight resemblance to the LR Cuthbertson.
