United Kingdom 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Santorini Black
2.2 engine management light/"limp mode"
Hello
I can't believe I'm about to say this but I'm just about ready to give up on my 110!!
I bought it brand new a 110 utility having looked at a great deal of 2nd hand vehicles commanding a high price.
When it works I love it it's primarily a working vehicle to tow trailers and be my mobile workshop for the farm and contracting business I run.
The last 18 months it has been attended to by Land Rover assist so many times I've lost count along with many long stays on the main dealers supposedly getting fixed.
My favourite fix so far is a side repeater that was full of water! (Aparantly it is necessary to put the engine on power save mode if this is the case!)
I digress
Basically it has let me down more than any other piece of machinery in my business!
Towing a trailer with 3 cattle in during rush hour, engine management light came on then into limp mode, had to pull over as I couldn't go over 20mph. Resulted in a nasty telling off from a copper who was adimant the trailer was over loaded hence my slow speed (no just an engine fault officer!)
Collecting parts for a tractor about 2hrs from home, took nearly 4 hours to get back hoping I wasn't doing any untold damage only for the fault to disappear the next day when the Land Rover assist guy turned up!
This was last weekend and it's been fine all week till Friday when once fully loaded with family and luggage just leaving to visit in laws in Scotland you've guessed it.... Engine management light and then limp mode!!! Luckily my mum came to the rescue and we've used her Clio all weekend, a touch cramped but at least it goes! She's used the 110 all weekend and says it's going fine!!!!!
Anyway rant over and back to the problem, is this a common problem that Land Rover won't talk about? It's just about out of warranty and I won't be spending any of my own money on it! Is there an easy fix that I've missed or am I destined to buy a hilux or a Isuzu like most other farmers have done!!
As far as I can work out there is no actual fault with the engine or anything else, and the fault (I think) is with the engine management side of things. But when Land Rover do their diagnostics, nothing of note ever comes up!
I like my land rovers and they've all had their faults but this has caused me to doubt my allegiance to the Land Rover marque!
Any ideas guys?!
AJ

I had the exact same experience with a D4. 20 days and hundreds of test miles with the dealer and no fix. I traded it back to them. Their diagnostics aren't precise enough to be of any value, they leave too many variables to check, all the while you the owner lose confidence. Very frustrating. I hope you get it sorted out.

Confidence is very low especially in main dealership, they just don't seem interested. I'm taking it to an independent Land Rover specialist this week in the hope they can suggest something.

Hi, i have the same problem with my Puma from New. You can search the Forum about this issue. Its probably your Turbo hose. Check it for leaks ( rev your engine and see if the turbo hose leaks.). I had the 'Limp home mode ' came on every time i gun the engine up a hill or accelerate out onto the highway. My turbo hose blow a hole near the jubilee clip). Basically the engine ecu is getting a different reading from the Airbox MFS and the air intake into the engine. Resulting in a error code and your engine will go into the 'Limp home ' mode.
I had my turbo hose replaced with the Silicon hose and it has been fine ever since.

Turbo hose has been replaced under recall I think, but I'll check.
I've had it on the laptop at a independent garage this morning and 2 faults show up which are both throttle/pedal position sensor/switch voltage, signal compare failure. So hoping to go to main dealers with a bit more ammo than usual.

Mine had the same issue - it was an intercooler leak. Replacement intercooler fitted & all done. It was diagnosed on the second go!
