Now that Britain is out of the EU
I would like to know something, if England is out of the EU dose that mean that landrover can start producing defenders again. It was the EU emission and safety laws that put a stop to having these trucks built in the first place.
It's just a question Shocked

Simple answer is NO.

The U.K. Is still in the EU and will probably be in the EU until 2018 at the earliest.

The referendum result voted to leave the EU, but that process has not started yet.

Switzerland never was in the EU. But has to abide in full by all European car manufacturing specs, including the EU emission norms. No exceptions. Can you imagine that any civilized country would say, oh well, now we are going to produce Defenders again like before.
And how would they do that in the first place? I understood that the assembly line has been scrapped, not even disassembled for later reassembly.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

This is one thing that I would concede to the EU is the quality of air in town compared to say 20 years ago and going back on emissions regs just to keep the defender would be a bit mental. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Lamd Rover are there to make money, not produce nostalgia in vehicle form. It was a (long overdue) business decision, nothing to do with EU regs.

They can make far more money selling shopping cars to school run mums

^ Totally agree with Retro. It was Landrover's decision to stop producing the Defender.
They chose to evolve Range Rovers so they could continue selling them, just as every other manufacturer has done with their model range.

Not sure that JLR will want to build cars they can't sell in the EU or America, kind of limits your options.

Defender is done (and not because of the EU, because they were a poorly selling, hard to build, limited market dinosaur), us in Europe is done, we need to live with that now Smile

I would imagine the new one will be sellable world wide inc the USA.

I doubt I'll be buying any, happy with the one I have for years to come. No doubt anything new would have a Disco price tag too.
People will be scared to get it on mud..

Yesterday looked again at the YT video of an original Ford Corsair advertisement.

Demonstrated some things regarded as "uncool" - lighting up a ciggie whilst driving and not wearing seatbelts.

Maybe in 50 years' time our grandchildren will look at videos of we driving Defenders and think how "uncool" we were ...

no major manufacturer will make a car specifically for the UK (bare rhd) now. We are too small to matter. Look at the size of us to say Europe or the states 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r

Correct, which is why export spec Defenders (and other Land Rovers) exist that don't meet EU emissions regs.

What about the Land Rovers Withams sell 'for export outside the EU only' - could you buy one and sit on it for a bit?

You could certainly buy one and sit on it, I doubt you'd ever be able to use it on the road here though.
I may be wrong, but I'd imagine that we'd err on the side of stricter regulations on emissions if we didn't stick to the Euro emissions standards.
