Again, megs wheel cleaner is excellent. The off the shelf crap from Halfrauds strips the wax - highly corrosive. The M3's wheels (as you can imagine) used to get significant carbon build up. They were professionaly waxed initialy and then cleaned with megs wheel cleaner, I can honestly say I never once had to scrub the wheels, only wipe them down. None of the typical hard spots of carbon build up....I used the M3 on the track as well. Incidentally, great car but ultimately an overly expensive toy......£700 for a set of rear boots and £1500 for an interim service was just too much. The M3 is though a runabout compared to the one before.....an E61 M5. Checkout http://www.stevejtaylor.com/gallery/object...aylor.html |

You had an M5 (is E61 the estate version?!) - blimey!
Landy a wee bit slower! Our 335d gives pretty rapid performance (286bhp officially, most well over 300 and the trump card of 428lbs-ft. Again most running 440 stock, 60 in 5.7, 100 in 13.3, etc) but is actually fairly sensible to run. Went for an SE version on purpose as I hate oversized alloys - so tyres are reasonable (handy as the last set of CSC3 rears lasted 8k miles!) and running costs sensible. Strikes a good balance between rapid but not wallet shredding. I like it a lot. ![]() |

Yep - e61 is the touring.
Just like this I have had over a dozen BMW's in the last 15 years (all on contract I hasten to add). I have had a 335d touring albeit m sport. Have also had a 535d saloon m sport which has to be my favourite BMW out of all of them, over and abobe the M3 (had current and last generation M3) and the M5 - great space and comfort, reasonable economy and sheer grunt (DMS tuned). I have also had a D3 and an RRS (sorry). I have to say though that I have become most quickly attached to the Defender than any car I have had in my possesion. i am sure I won't move it on, I just want to go an cuddle it! It has more charm and character than any other car I have owned......M3 & M5 are blisteringly quick and awesome on a track but they are little more than impressive pieces of engineering, you very quickly learn to ignore and take them for granted. Our Landy is already part of the family ![]() |

The weekend before I chopped the M5 in, we took a last romantic trip to the track......this was the result:

Wow - a serial speedy BM owner!
I went for the SE for a number of reasons - I don't trust M Sport alloys. Many have cracked. Don't like the plastic rear apron - hides the exhausts and grey plastic, the spoiler stoves our 1 in 3 gradient drive (!), I am a HUGE fan of "sleepers" so a 335d that looks (to the uninitiated!) just like a 318d was ideal! Full panoramic sunroof, terra (red brown) dakota leather and M Sport suspension plus a few other bits raise it's spec a bit and I stuck non RFTs on as soon as I possibly could! The 17s, non RFTs and M Sport suspension seem to give a brilliant ride/handling compromise that I've never felt in any other BM to date. M Sports do look good (mostly) but just not my cup of tea but far more "allowed" on a 335d/335i than a lowly 318d/320d/320i, etc! "All show, not much go" being my most hated car genre! But LOL at me telling you about 335d stats when you had one for a while - DOH DOH DOH!!! ![]() ![]() Anyway I digress. A lot. What you DO get with a Landy is other people liking you! People let you in, people wave, people chat to you. A BM is an object of derision, usually from Focus/Mondeo/Astra/Vectra drivers who fling every bit of aggro they can to make themselves feel better! Have to say that although modest by most standards (especially yours!!), the combination of a 335d Touring and a 110 "Puma" XS Landy really does complete my rather low rent "dream" garage. Both cover pretty much all bases! LRs definitely get under your skin in a way few others marques do. Hence wanting to keep both clean and well maintained! As a side issue, bought both for cash so we "own" them completely. Never getting car finance out ever again after a rather naive couple of new car purchases on big interest finance. Did the sums AFTER I sold them and nearly cried! Hey - bet you weren't expecting all that?! Apologies! Some wicked cars you've had! Love the M5 Touring but killer mpg and dire range on a tank made them a no no (plus of course they are out of my price range!) Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

Bottom line is you will NEVER come off well buying and selling cars. All my finance is dealt with through a trusted indy broker....for all my efforts though I still loose (exception being the M5, I bought at the start of the recession and sold on at a profit)
![]() I have never given a stuff about stereo types....I agree about the social acceptance point. No one likes a BMW driver, period. I have found though that driving M series BMW's is slightly different..... They still hate you but you are going so quickly it makes not the blindest difference ![]() I am an advanced driver and understand the finer points of defensive driving..... as my dear old mother says though, I still drives it like I stole it ![]() 8500 rpm in an M5 in 2nd is like nothing you will EVER experience....period (and I mean that!)......unless of course you are doing 2000 rpm in a defender at 55mph (and I mean that!!!!). My smile is significantly bigger in the defender I have a little 116d on the driver to supplement the landy and it is working out well.... other than that SWMBO is now coming up with more and more elaborate excuses to drive Rafe (cough) sorry, the Defender. Character, character & more character........no BMW delivers that. |

just one point on power.
Diesel aficionados love to talk about torque, petrol heads love to talk about 0-60 times and standing quarter mile times. If speed is genuinely your thing.......nothing but nothing beats 5 litres, 10 cylinders and 510bhp...nothing ![]() I matched a GT3's time around Castle Combe in Wiltshire to within 7 10ths. I had been visiting my mums and had the children's bikes in the back ![]() It does though come at a price......namely 12mpg and 2K a year in extended warranty |

Both cars keep me and the wife (and two year old boy and black lab!) happy - I simply leave the BM alone when it's snowy/icy!
Also get a huge kick from the Defender's abilities though - used to be a Geotec engineer and pushed our modded fleet 110s (TD5s) to the absolute limit. If we ever got stuck (I didn't) there was always a JCB to pull us out! Wife also loves Landies - she took her test in a (brand new at the time) 90 pick up 300TDI and learned to drive in her dad's (new) Impreza turbo wagon. 335d does very well for a diesel - beat a 335i (manual) and an E46 M3 around Bruntingthorpe (only 2s behind an E92 M3) and a few have also outdragged E46 M3s at Santa Pod. A mate scalped several then chipped his and even beat the odd E90 M3. I'm not a diesel bore - I'm just a 35d engine bore. Nothing comes close (Jag 3.0 unit is good but more of a cruisy unit) for a soot chucker! Had a Golf R32 for a while - slower but a magical soundtrack. Soundtrack not the same in a 335d but it still goes very well and (boring bit) 35-40 mpg and 400 miles + on a tank of diesel! Sorry TC - info overload but GREAT to "meet" a fellow BM and LR enthusiast! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

The wheels fell off? You must have REALLY ragged it!
Don't think the replacement turbo'd 8 pot will have the same excitement as the V10 but emissions regs are killing big N/A engines. *** he said while owning a £435 a year, 295g/km LR Defender!!*** New M3 looks pretty evil - I WISH they'd do a Touring version! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |
