Good morning,
I am sure that this has already been addressed, but having recently purchased a 2007 Defender 110 2.4tdci I am eager to give it a 'birthday' and change its transmission fluids. Needless to say the oil specifications that I am used to from previous Land Rovers don't apply to this one. The main difficulty that I have run into is finding a suitable alternative to the Casstrol BOT 130M specified in the manual for the gearbox - it seams that this is not readily available (good work Land Rover!). I would be very interested to know what oils are being recommended by other owners. Many thanks in advance for any advice given and apologies if I am rekindling a well discussed topic. |

Thank you for this info Driver 9 - it always amazes me how there can be so many oil specifications for similar applications. I guess the metallurgy of modern transmissions demand specific properties from the oil.

BOT 130M is what should be used and you can get it from any landrover dealer

Hi Mark,
I spoke to my local LR dealer and they told me that they don't stock the BOT 130M, but instead stock / recommend Castrol BOT 328, whick they claim has superseded the 130M. Needless to say it is very expensive at £19.60 + VAT / L. I then spoke to Opie Oils: they gave me the option of Castrol Syntrans 75W/80 V/FE GL5, Fuchs Sinto Fluid 75W/80 or Motyl Gear 75W/80 as suitable alternatives for the gearbox - I was hoping not to have a choice, but to be told 'this is what you need'! As to the transfer box and differentials they suggested Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W90 (fully synthetic) or Castrol Universal 75W/90 GL4 (semi sythetic) None of the above oils are exactly what is specked in the manual, but I was hoping to get a feel as to what others were using. Jumped through these hoops with my 2007 Puma 2.4 a few months ago...
As mentioned already, my alternative to BOT130M is Castrol Syntrans Multi Vehicle 75W-90. Compare the specifications: BOT130M: Click image to enlarge Syntrans 75W-90: Click image to enlarge Density, viscosities and pour point look familiar? FWIW, it's running smooooth |

Yes, apologies you're right, I had forgotten it had been superseded by BOT328 but you don't need a whole lot of it or need to change it again for some time so is it really that expensive? Mark |

I use Motul oils in both gearbox & transfer case:
Gearbox: Motul Gear 300 75w90 Transfer box: Motyl Gear 75w90 -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged

Hold on
 Castrol BOT 130M is GL4.
The gearbox is specified as GL4 The Transfer Box is GL5 By all means do a search on the web for GL4 vs GL5, but in my opinion suggest sticking with GL4 for the GBox... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Actually I'm going back to Castrol Syntrans as the gearbox doesn't seem to be as smooth during changes using the stuff recommended to me by an independent I've been using. He recommended Penrite Power Plus or something for gear and transfer boxes and diffs.
My box certainly doesn't seem to change as well as the "snick" between gears is worse now. I'm also going back to Castrol for the engine as well. Their oils may be dearer but I like them and the vehicle feels better. AlanH. |

Many thanks to you all for your advise / opinions. I will change all of the transmission oils shortly We are traveling down through Spain to Portugal later in the Summer and I am trying to get the Land Rover 'ship shape' to give us the best chance of getting there and back without mishap - I wish that I had changed Pounds for Euros last week!

I ended up putting Motul Gear 300 75W90 in the gearbox, transfer box and differentials. I was relieved to see that what drained out was clean and more or less the correct volume!
