How to stop the wipers when squirting the windscreen??
Afternoon All,
This sounds really petty but it is starting to bug me.

When pressing the screen wash on the stalk (not selecting wipers) the wipers run with a dry screen covered in bugs and dirt making a right mess and trashing the wiper blade.
The screen wash seems to squirt after a full sweep of the windscreen with a big delay.
I don't have access to Topix to see if the is a relay that can be changed to get rid of the auto wipe when washing the screen.
Can anyone pass on a wiring diagram for a 15MY or advise on any possible relay that could be changed?

Ta

Mark

Put a non-return valve in the washer line, that way the fluid won't drain back and it will squirt from the moment you press the stalk.

That's odd, mine doesn't do that. Water squirts immediately when pressing the button Cheers, David

If you put the vw relay upgrade in it still wipes but only a couple of times instead of the 500 wipes on the standard relay plus you get total control over the intermittent time. Ray

^^^ plus you can do a short squirt without activating the wipers. So you can get plenty of water on before the wipers activate if you are prepared to do a series of several short squirts first Thumbs Up

edit to clarify that I was referring to the VW or "99" relay.

This is also something that bugs me.
I've just had a look at my RAVE wiring diagram('12 on) and I think I've found a cheats way to eliminate the wipe function.
The single feed from the switch splits into 2, pump and wiper relay and all using Light Green with a Black trace wires.
Behind the instrument cluster towards the left(Both LH & RH drive) is plug C0285, a yellow 20 pin connecter.
Pin 18 is the feed from the washer switch.
Pin 17 is the washer pump supply.
Pin 19 triggers the wiper relay.
So, if I cut the wire feeding pin 19(allowing enough to resolder if needed) this should stop a signal to the wiper relay.
This should turn the washer switch to a wash only function and I can then turn the wiper on and off as I want.

All going to plan I'll have my cluster out next weekend to change the radio antenna cable so I'll investigate it then.
I'm going to extend the Orange/Grey alarm/fob wire to extend the range while there too.

Cheers, Kyle. Cheers,
Kyle.

Thanks for the replys.

Alien, did you cut the feed to the pump at the wiper switch?

I will have a look for the wire you mention at the pump to see if it can be de pinned.

Well I could not find the yellow plug but then the grey matter kicked in and I now have a wash only function Very Happy

What I did...
Removed the inside fuse box cover.
Remove wiper relay(picture next post)
Uncliped the relay base and pull it forward(picture 2 below)
I removed the red insert and with a fine screw driver pulled the LightGreen with a Black trace wire and terminal out.(picture 1 below)
(Testing at this point proved every thing else still works as it should)
Taped it up to stop shorts and refited the red insert.
Put it back on the clip, fitted the relay and cover.
Job done.

If you don't want to remove the terminal I'd cut the wire 1" from the holder and insulate it all up.
This should allow for it to be rejoined if required.

(Pictures taken after I proved it worked and before putting it all back together.)

If I've followed correctly you have removed one connection from the relay base (the Green/Black).

Just a thought...(now that you have done the hard work Thumbs Up ) if anyone wanted to do the same thing but plug and play without modifying the vehicle itself - you could CAREFULLY cut off the contact tab from the relay itself?
To reverse you would need a new relay.
Alternatively there is likely to be a like for like replacement relay with this pin missing as standard. It would need a trawl through a manufacturer's catalogue (or two).
With a bit of luck it might be very cheap and easily available, depending on how common it is used in other vehicles.

Cutting the pin off the relay would work Thumbs Up
As you said it's a permanent solution though.
By the time you flafed around to do it I would think it'd be quicker to cut and tape the wire.
It's only one joiner away from returning the function if required this way.

Similar to the wire and fuse you can see in the window relay position in the photo.
This allows the front electric Windows to work all the time not needing the ignition to be on, great for when camping.
This is also my "keys locked in car" entry strategy, lever the window frame out and use the UHF aerial to push the window button Wink
The relay is in my cubby box so can be fitted at anytime to return to normal.

When I do any modification I try to allow for it to easily be returned to original specifications.
Don't know why as this unit is a keeper but it's old habits, particularly if it's a road worthy(MOT) item. Cheers,
Kyle.

Since I am working Christmas I figured a treat was needed.. Type 99 relay fitted, money well spent.
Very handy on long drivers in cruddy weather.
And now the windscreen washer now works without dragging dry wiper blades across the screen.
